- concertconfessions.comAs you may or may not know, I love reggae and most of its sub-genres. Be it white-guy frat reggae (ok, maybe not that kind) or older black-gentlemen reggae, it’s just fun music to listen to and get the spirits up. So one can imagine how psyched I was to see Fishbone, one of the most underrated live ...

- Are You Afro? expounds upon the fact that all human beings come from Africa and with them, our collective music; distinct but linked to the continent of Africa. Are You Afro? suggests further that the global community is the personification of the polyrhythmic beats native to Africa. To ask Are You Afro? is to answer t...hat we--artists, workers, architects and dreamers are one beat made of many. In 2010 Harlem-based dancer and promoter Gale Murphy and DJ Dave K Pappa both made a splash at the Miami Winter Conference with the Maude34 party and solidified Dave as a rising star among DJs. This same electric energy and desire to sew community together with the common thread of African rooted music introduced the party and brand Are You Afro? First introduced as a line on a t-shirt, Are You Afro? streaked across the sweat soaked chests of house music fans from all parts of the world. Whether Japanese, Greek, German, Brazilian, or African American the question remains: do you consider yourself as apart of the collective beat which stems from Africa? "I am what I am because of who we all are." - Ubuntu, African Proverb In 2011, Gale and Dave partnered with accomplished cellist and DJ, Myrto Joyce, who was born in Boston but raised in Greece and has continued to travel globally from a young age. Together they transformed the question "Are You Afro?" into a living punctuation of music and movement by launching the Are You Afro? monthly party at Grotto Lounge in the Lower East Side. The launch party attracted beautiful faces and dancers from around the globe. Are You Afro parties has featured DJ's from one end of the continental divide to the other: Max Pela of Afrobeta Bodega / Uhuru Afrika (Dominican Republic), Antonello Coghe of Nulu Music / Vega Records (Italy), Anane Vega of Nulu Music / Vega Records (Cape Verde), Kev Kruz of Mecca Digital HI- FI (NYC), Dave K of Are You Afro ? / Moonlight party (Italy) and Myrto Joyce of Are You Afro? / Afrobeta Bodega (Greece). They have all contributed their style of music to the collective beat echoed on the dance floor. While attracting dance crowds from around the world in NYC, Are You Afro has now grown global with new parties launching in Italy this year. See MorePage: 421 like this
