Flaming Lotus Girls joseph pred has some good information about cell service on the playa. It sounds like it is *extremely* limited in the number of cell phones allowed to connect and will just not work once 40,000+ people arrive.

Some people think that emergency management and lighting things on fire are somehow polar opposites. On the playa: if it's burning or bleeding it's my problem.
Flaming Lotus Girls Verizon Cell Service on the Playa - Is it True? Apparently there is a group who registered for a special permit for a cell tower. They are going to let xxx number of phones register to have access. Those phones will be able to send SMS messages on playa. Plus there is now good cellphone service in gerlach for att & ve...rizon. Its going to be a sad day when everyone can talk on their cellphone at BRC :(

On Saturday, lots of people showed up (probably over 15 total) to
put parts on the LED driver boards. Many people worked the whole
day, more than 8 hours. The result is pretty incredible: all 75
boards for Soma were built!!! That is 3,525 parts placed in one day!
