Dear FLOW Members, A Google search on the terms “Bhutan” and “Gross National Happiness” yields 50,600 hits, page after page of glowing prose describing how this remote Himalayan nation places “environmental concerns and spiritual well-being over rampant capitalism.” A Google search on the terms “...

Amen, Michael.

One of the great intellectual difficulties for those of us who, like me, harbor egalitarian sentiments is coming to terms with the fact that the greatest crimes against human dignity have been committed not in the name of profit but in the name of guaranteeing the equality of all -- and the kicker is, even then, as Orwell so memorably put it, some remain "more equal than others."

And yet too many of us cannot bring ourselves to acknowledge that a system that is based on the recognition that not everyone is equal in every way produces greater equality than those systems that hold equality up as an ideal.... See More

My form of acknoweldging this truth is to modify Winston Churchill's famous comment about democracy: "Capitalism is the worst economic system ever devised - except for all the others."

Rock on, Jeff and Michael! We need all the sane and positive forces we can point our "leaders" to. Please let us know where these policy papers will be presented and how they are to be promoted.

Patrick Siebert

Patrick Siebert Brother Michael, I am concerned when I read the words "which altruists can become vicious when others disagree with them" and "impulse to become verbally abusive on behalf of a cause" in your article. We have been friends long enough for you to know how much I respect your intellectual vigor and your compassionate nat...ure. What concerns me is using the judgmental words "vicious" and "abusive" in reference to those that disagree with John's opinion will instantly find the rest of your article unworthy of reading.

My purpose in this format is to briefly raise my concerns over labeling others. My purpose is not to present a full and comprehensive analysis of my view on things.

Just as you, I fully want all of us to express our opinions and state our disagreements in no uncertain terms and to do so in a compassionate and respectful manner.

So, u ole billy goat, (judgmental terms of endearment in Texas) I hope I have added my two cents worth and have stirred the pot a little. peace.

By Michael Strong The most annoying aspect of the partisan lynch mob of John Mackey is the claim that he is a “heartless CEO” or, in the words of the Facebook “Boycott Whole Foods” page, John Mackey, CEO and co-founder of Whole Foods wrote an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal on 8/12/09 quoting...

Mark, Public funding is one thing, public control is another. As someone who has created great schools, and who knows for a fact that through charter schools (less government control) and vouchers or tax credits (even less government control) we could provide immense educational advantages to our most disadvantaged youth. The single thing that I ... See Morerespect Obama for most is the fact that he advocated for charter schools, which the teachers' unions hate, when he was neck-and-neck with Hillary Clinton in the primaries, while she was promoting the straightforward teachers' union agenda. This was a very courageous act on his part, and I expect he did it because he knows from personal experience that inner city blacks are the constituency most committed to school choice, because they are getting screwed the worst by the current system.

So, yes, government schools are socialism, it is the most socialistic component of our entire economy and while they serve the nomenklatura in the wealthy suburbs reasonably well, the working class are getting screwed and inner city blacks are really getting screwed by this socialism.
