Blade Covers
While not exactly a Swiss watch, an aircraft propeller is still a delicate and expensive piece of machinery. A dent or ding in a perfectly-balanced prop blade can be a tragic event. It costs money and time to fix and can put an aircraft temporarily out of commission. To avoid such a mishap during heavy ...maintenance, the mechanics employ homemade blade covers. They can be seen here in use on the FHC’s Curtiss P-40C Tomahawk. Covered in red fabric “socks” lined with soft foam sheets, the propeller blades are well protected from hard-to-wrangle piece of cowling or an errant tool.

The Tail Plug
The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 A was designed to fly with a BMW radial engine. The later version, like the FHC’s Focke-Wulf Fw 190 D-13, went to battle with a Junkers Jumo inverted V-12 engine. The new engine in the long-nosed airplane moved the center of gravity dangerously forward. In order to balance the figh...ter, designers lengthened the aft end of the fuselage too. A 50-centimeter “plug” was grafted into the D-model Focke-Wulf in order to keep the fighter properly balanced. You can see the simple splice on the FHC’s aircraft—it forms the white band circling the aft fuselage.

John Had a great time at the museum yesterday with my grandson. Staff and docent were very friendly and knowledgeable. Highly recommend anyone even remotely interested in aviation and/or military history go see the FHC! Thank you for a wonderful time, we will definitely be back.

Paul Williams Does anyone know of a P-47 currently flying on the East Coast, USA. I am in desperate need of a fly over for the burial of a P-47 pilot from WWII(Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart etc.) at Arlington National Cemetery on Jan.7, 2010. I know this sounds like a crazy request but I thought I would throw it out there just in case.

Alice Kim Jenkins A shout out to Mark Anders for your safe, emergency landing of the P-51 Mustang yesterday - you're a rock star! (& happy belated Veterans Day!) All the best, Alice Kim (daughter of the Tallahassee Lassie:))

The Pins
When you are flying in a fighter, it’s often hard to see if the landing gear is down and locked. Flying alone, there’s sometimes no one to ask. And pilots agree that their commanding officers were always most pleased when all of their landings involved the plane’s tires! If you look around the FHC, you’ll se...e that different designers solved the landing gear dilemma in different ways. One of the most popular was a pin that popped up from the top of the wing. This photo shows one of the striped pins on the Mitsubishi Zero. Pilots knew, if you can see the pins, the main gear is down.

Flying Heritage Collection is gearing up for our special Veterans Day event starting at 11:00 am tomorrow!
