The Frick Collection Irish artist Daniel Maclise painted a scene in 1833 of Halloween merry-making in Blarney, Ireland. Back then, it was called All-Hallow's Eve. Before that, it was the Celtic festival of Samhain. To learn more about this painting or other spooky art, visit the Frick Art Reference Library. We are open 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Halloween. Costume optional.

The Frick Collection Just through this weekend (yes, ending Sunday August 23rd), the Frick has on view a set of Whistler etchings and pastels of Venice. The artist captured an "off the beaten" path version of that wonderful city, with less attention to the obvious tourist vistas. Which approach to do you prefer? If you have seen this show, what is your favorite work in the series?

The Frick Collection What's your favorite aspect of the Frick's gardens? We'd love to know. While you are pondering that, take a look at the just-updated Garden Party 2009 album...yes new photos, as requested!

The Frick Collection
Frick fans already know the museum for its collections and very special atmosphere. Its gardens too, elevated and set back from Fifth Avenue, are beloved, but experienced rarely first hand as they are meant to be seen from afar and are not open to the public. However, the opportunity to enjoy a summer evening there c...ame along last week (along with a magic weather forecast). Nearly 290 people jumped at the chance to attend a benefit Garden Party on Wednesday, July 15. This event made its debut in 2008 and was hailed by the New York Times as one of the most memorable parties of the year. This past weekend, the party was beautifully featured again by the paper.
The Frick’s Fifth Avenue garden was redesigned at the time of the museum’s opening in 1935 by Frederick Law Olmsted Jr, son of the planner of Central Park. It features an elevated terrace with a charming pebble walk, a rose garden, a lower green along Fifth Avenue, a terrace along the building, and a classical portico. As guests sipped on the cocktail of the evening (cucumber gimlet!), the jazz quartet of vintage bandleader Michael Arenella offered a 1930s vibe with his renderings of the great American Songbook. As guests left, the stars came out on another enchanted evening in Manhattan. Join us for this special benefit next year, when the Frick marks the 75th anniversary of both museum and garden!
