The Future of Project Management Project Management Circa 2025 contributing author Alfonso Bucero discusses how project managers will have to help convince the "corporate powers-that-be" that project management and organiztional strategy need to be linked.

I think that some of Alfonso's suggestions are great as a way to further your career as a management professional within an enterprise. Helping others understand the value you bring will always be important - but it's doubtful that many Project Managers will devote a great deal of time ["convincing the corporate powers that be" that all projects need to be linked to strategy]

A clip from the article -

"For example, even if you’re not invited to make formal reports to organizational leaders, feel free to suggest the link between projects and strategy yourself. Attend meetings so that you become more informed and then ask for 10 minutes to present on a project’s status."... Read More

If you do what Alfonso outlines above, you need to be sure you are speaking to an audience that really understands the strategy. That way you can check your facts and talk things through. Otherwise your bad assumptions might just create confusion about where the company is going.

In my company, one of the largest oil companies in the world, all of our projects have clear linkage with corporate strategies. But it wasn't always clear how the initiatives and activities of our PMO or "Center of Excellence," which provides support for projects, were linked to our Project Management organization's strategies. We created a web-... Read Moreenabled activity tracking system as well as an initiative tracking system, both of which require users to define which of our PM strategies are supported by their activities or initiatives. If there is no linkage (which has not happened so far) then we should not be pursuing those activities. Having these linkages makes it easy to justify what we are doing and to get a measure of the value added, as well as providing a comfort level for management that we are on the right track.
