Yashica I am battling some sort of rodent eatting the pansies in a flower bed. What can I do to get rid of them?

Hi Yashica,

The first step is finding out exactly what's causing the damage. My guess is rabbits, but ask around your neighborhood to see if anyone else is having problems. Once you've identified the culprit, you can get to work. If rabbits are indeed the problem, you have several options -- with a fence being the most reliable. For more techniques, see this article:

Carole Rose Houghton I am baby sitting 2 clivias for snowbirds - and have one of my own. Do they need a period of dark to bloom and how should they be fertilized?

Hi Carole,
Clivia are among the most easy-care houseplants around. With luck, you'll see some spectacular blooms in late spring. Clivia do not need a period of darkness; however, they benefit from a rest period, which means cooler temperatures and restricted watering. You can find details in this article from the University of Wisconsin:

in Seattle, has orchids in a south-facing window w/ filtered light. I mist them frequently 'tho I have friends here who ignore their orchids and they rebloom. I also water then mist w/ dilute orchid fertilizer m/l once a week. Four of the five rebloom for months each year. I'm watching for blossom sprouts right now. I'm going to try the Terra-sorb crystals, thanks for the tip!

Melissa...when was the last time you repotted your phal? They like to be repotted once a year and only pot in a container that will give no more than an inch more space than the rootball. You can use a bark medium but I use sphagnum moss or in some plants a soiless medium. I have grown orchids for over 20 yrs and competed in national shows. I would reccomend my friends Dick & Sandy Wells of Hilltop Orchids. www.HilltopOrchids.com Good luck!

Shelby Question - I am in zone 5 and it's been quite warm. I was cleaning up my beds and noticed that some of my bulbs have started to sprout! They were under a Ton of leaves so perhaps it was nice and warm and they thought it was spring already. What should I do??
