We thought the picture on the front cover of the Journal was over the top and out of line. We could see the point they were making after studying it for a while but it was little much for the cover.

I was pleased to read about GFU’s new commitment to sustainability in the recent edition of George Fox Journal. I don’t have the article in front of me, but I recall that it asked how the staff and students might become more familiar with sustainability principles.

I have found the discussion courses from the Northwest Earth Institute in Portland to be really helpful in understanding sustainability issues and principles. NWEI publishes a set of discussion course books which participants purchase for about $20 each. Someone from NWEI comes to the first discussion meeting, and the rest of the meetings are facilitated by the discussion group participants, rotating the facilitation each week.

I have taken almost all of their courses here at work (during lunch), and have really enjoyed them. A pretty high percentage of people here have taken at least one course.... Read More

George Fox University Portland has the second highest number of sex trafficking victims in the nation. Most of them are children, and they need our help. Please share this video on your wall to encourage your friends to get involved and put an end to trafficking and slavery in our community.

Wayne, are you suggesting that the johns who traffic in women and children are primarily undocumented immigrants? If so, that is not an argument or assertion I've heard before. I am sure there is some percentage of men who purchase the vulnerable for sex that might be undocumented, but I'd have to think that is a very small percentage. Or, are you arguing that the children are the ones to blame? That too would be an argument that I'm not familiar with.

While it can be said there are many variables in the cause of sex trafficking, from poverty to power, it is still an illegal and absolutely unacceptable practice. We should understand the causes to adequately fight the fight, however, I think we must first come to understand the problem exists and your very own doctor, teacher, bus driver may be participating. This crosses cultural and socio-economic barriers. It is a fight we must all engage in as human beings respecting other human beings.

As the culmination event for the “Week of Living Light”, George Fox community members met on the quad at 3:50pm to form a giant “350”. Immediately after, the group participated in an awareness walk to city hall to present a petition.

The “Week of Living Light” is focused on doing everyday things (ie. cooking, eating, ta...king a shower, etc.) in a way that conserves energy and lessens the carbon output in the environment. The number 350 represents the number of carbon parts per million that allow for a sustainable environment. We are currently at 385 parts per million.

Each day of the week, participants did things to lessen their carbon output:

Monday – Bring your own mug day.
Tuesday – A day unplugged. Reduce electricity use.
Wednesday – Walk or bike to school/work.
Thursday –Eat a vegetarian meal.
Friday – Skip a shower day.

More information about this event can be found at http://www.350.org

I think that what we were doing this week was seriously and conscientiously challenging this idea of materialism, not only for the culture, but also for Christians. We were saying that Christians do just as much harm to this world, even if it is in different ways.

I think as Christians, we often think that we need to be the initiators of good things going on in this world. We think that anything headed up by secular causes must be bad, when really it's not the cause that is bad, but maybe the intentions behind it. So, when we see people standing up for a cause, why shouldn't we join in and say, we agree with what you're doing, but we believe that it shouldn't be done out of selfish ambition, but out of the love that Christ has given us?... Read More

By the way, there is no such thing as the secular world. There is one world that God has given to humans to take care of. We again are isolating ourselves from everyone when we think that we are better somehow. Yes, we have hope and a love that surpasses anything, but we still make the same mistakes that everybody else does. God says that He makes Himself known to those that don't know Him. If we are created in His image, shouldn't we be doing the same?

Truth is God's truth, even if someone in the "secular world" has it first, I would think. Judy, I would think a cursory read of Gen. 1,2 would suggest that care for creation is a significant part of living biblically.

Carla, yes, Quakers have been at the forefront of human rights efforts since their inception. This springs from George Fox's theology of the "inner light" being in ALL people, regardless of ethnicity. In the great abolitionist movements of England and America, Quakers joined other Christians in leading the way. It seems that this new call is utterly at the heart of who George Fox was and Quakers have always been.
