If the course title Philosophy and Star Trek isn’t enough to grab your attention, Professor Linda Wetzel will. Roaming the front of her classroom on a Tuesday morning, she draws her students into a fusillade of questions: “Can cause come after effect? Can I trip today because my shoelaces are going to be untied tomorrow? Can I be in two different places at the same time? Is time travel possible?” Then she frames her queries in a different way: “In the Wrath of Khan, they bred a race of superstars in the 20th century and sent them off to space in cryogenically sealed vacuum packs. When Kirk wakes them up in 2267 they haven’t aged. Is that time travel?” Six hands shoot up, and debate ensues.
This fall marks the seventh time Wetzel has offered Philosophy and Star Trek, which explores traditional philosophers—from Descartes to David Kellogg Lewis—using the science fiction classic as a backdrop. Students watch five episodes from Star Trek: The Original Series and Star Trek: The Next Generation, and then apply philosophical ideas and theories to topics that include time travel, free will and the mind-body connection.

The dozens of student groups at Georgetown that volunteer their time and service to others might seem to cover every possible need, but Roland Dimaya (N’09) and Jonathan Brower (C’09) were surprised by the immense response when they decided to start a math and science tutoring program.
“Jon and I went from an idea on paper to a roomful of Georgetown students in a hurry,” Dimaya says. Brower adds “What we thought might happen with this program 10 years down the road came about in a year and-a-half. We found an untapped resource.”
The two roommates were looking for tutoring opportunities that better matched their skill sets—Dimaya majored in human science, Brower in biochemistry—than the existing programs that mostly focused on literacy. They had written down their plans, but realized they didn’t know exactly how to proceed. With help from the provost’s office and the Center for Social Justice (CSJ), they created the GUMSHOE math and science outreach program, now in its second year and with more than 70 Georgetown students offering assistance to high school students throughout Washington, D.C.
