Since the community these two individuals are a part of is aware that Dr. Tatia is a singer, it is not surprising that a client has asked her this question. After all ethical considerations are weighed regarding the possible degredation to the therapeutic alliance, the therapist's own grieving process, confidentiality, and the impact on other ... Read Moreclients, I would suggest Dr. Tatia ask her client if he or a family member is making funeral arrangements on his behalf. If so , he can give a list of possible individuals to sing at his funeral to either a family member or funeral home director and then that individual can make the arrangements when neccessary. Dr. Tatia's answer, whether it is a yes or a no, could have adverse effects on her professional relationship with this client, and so she may be uncomfortable answering either way. While everyone's grieving process is unique, for me singing at my grandmother's funeral was difficult, but it was my way of demonstrating the love and respect I had for her.

I agree with Micah. Let's not forget that we're humans first. And it's important not to keep in mind that the dying woman is unlikely to understand a refusal based on professional grounds and could be harmed by a refusal. Sometimes people (of any profession) can get carried away with the importance of their "role" when there's nothing to be gained and perhaps something to be lost.

As psychology graduate students, do you think your recommendation would be taken especially seriously, or less so? (E.g. For a carpenter, every problem looks like a nail.)

I think having a master's and being a doctoral student helps others to take me (and my profession) more seriously, and I have had family and friends ask for advice or just ask me questions. I answer honestly if I can but I try not to speculate too much, and I try to clear up misconceptions that people almost always have. If someone was struggling... Read More with a personal issue I wouldn't tell them they needed therapy, but I would suggest that seeing someone might help. I think coming from me that would be less threatening than it would be from someone without a psychology background.

I believe this is situational depending on the seriousness of the issue, the relationship I have with the person, the time and place, and my competency with the issue. If I know someone will hurt themselves or others, I will act fast and inform the proper authorities, otherwise... purely situational! Kindly telling someone they need professional help is like walking on thin ice. Depending on the situation you could make or break the deal.

Evelyn, I just moved to Canada for my internship and needed to get a visa. I was strongly cautioned against hiring an attorney, as they would not have access to any other information than what I already had. Things may be different entering the US, but just thought I'd share.
