If the president really wants the press to leave his kids alone he needs to stop putting them in the spotlight. I feel sorry for Malia.

So true! I remember coming home proud of two A's and two B's and my Grandma said, "WHAT HAPPENED?" What? "Why didn't you get 4 A's??" Hummm.... good point. After that, I got all A's. Raise the expectations.

I, too, want to send my daughter to one of the "GreatSchools" of California. But, we cannot neglect our responsibility as parents to teach them the behaviors to succeed wherever they go.

Hey Chris, if you go to http://community.greatschools.net you'll see a box on the right side that says "Local Q&A". If you select Adelphi, MD from the city/state drop-downs, you can see some discussion about schools in your area. We're still growing our local communities, so I'd encourage you to post your question there!

GreatSchools Community Q&A: Does anyone have discipline ideas for a 1st grader using bad language? http://bit.ly/3Q9K6p

Looking for discipline ideas for bad language in 1st grader? Since school started has been swearing and or using his middle finger. This is not something he is learning at home.

If it's not something learned at home, it'd be worth the conversation to discover where the source is. Just the chat might lead to some ways to address the problem. It seems as if he's aware that his behavior is disruptive - removing the "shock" response might subdue the behavior some, but you still need to find the cause.

When my friend's child went through this "stage" the pediatrician said that it was normal and to ignore. But my personal opinion is that they do it because they don't know the difference between one word and another, except that when they say bad words everyone reacts. So one option could be not reacting to it. I think semantics, word meanings, is ... Read Morea hard concept for very young children. So try to touch his/her affective by telling him/her how people feel when they use their words and provide alternative words to describe people, feelings, etc. And if all else fails, time out for 5-6 minutes might work!
