  • High bone density is an indication of "compressive strength," while tensile strength - the ability of bone to stretch or twist in a fall - is a quality that is not measured by DXA scans. In fact, in some cases the higher the bone density the poorer the bone quality. Megadoses of calcium and bisphosphonate drugs like Fosamax make the bone denser but weaker.

      • Annette Hasalone Agreed! Fosamax = fossilized bone. I don't think having a fossilized bone structure in your body while still living is a bad idea.

      • Kristine Mestaz Very true! Bone is alive and goes way beyond how much calcium you take in (especially if it's from milk or low quality supplements). Remember the osteoblasts and osteoclasts!

Mark - ah, yes, you mean the somatic cell content (pus) of recombinant bovine growth hormone produced milk, right? GROSS

      • Kathy Thompson It has been my understanding that milk actually IS a specialized form of blood. Please correct me if I'm wrong....

bone density scans have their short comings, but by large its still the best objective indicator to fracture risk. As for fosamax/calcium, nearly everything can be harmful when consumed to excess, smart supplementing folks!

Kathy- nah milk... is just the secretion of mammary glands, similar to other glands just like sweat glands or glads that manufacture bile. Blood has specific cells included in it. There are no purposeful cells released in milk, its just neonate nutrition packed with carbs, emulsified fat, and protein. Easiest thing on the planet for a baby to digest.See More

      • GreenMedInfo.com Jamison - Thanks for your input. if you can provide any research demonstrating the link between high bone density and reduced bone fracture rates off MEDLINE, I would greatly appreciate it.

Also, you may want to take a look at this study which indicates the margin of error for DXA scans is as wide as + or - 20%.

My mother was on Fosamax, then Boniva - not to "excess", but according to her doctor's recommendations. She now has bone loss in her jaw because of it. She is now also taking a lot of supplements to try to counteract the effects of these ...drugs (including the homeopathic cell salt calc fluor run through the biophoton to antidote the Boniva.) She was also taking calcium, as was recommended, oh, by every commercial, article, and doctor out there! And not in a bioavailable form.
We need to be getting enough natural sodium (from plants) in our diets so that our bodies will stop leaching calcium from our bones in order to counteract the acidifying effects of our acid-ash producing diets and stress. And as we get older we need about double the amount of magnesium in relation to calcium - most cal-mag supplements out there are the opposite. We also need our supplements to be in bioavailable form (from plants,) and our digestive systems need to be in good shape in order assimilate the nutrients we put in our bodies!

I couldn't put much time into this right now, but I punched some questions into google and found this study:http://www.motionhealth.com/pdf/Leo-articles/1009.pdf which follows sound logic.

Karen keep in mind I never said Fosamax was a magi...c bullet cure-all, but the flat out fact that you'll be hard pressed to argue against is that the benefits of taking fosamax in appropriately diagnosed elderly women outweigh the risks. I don't have time to validate/argue your claims, but I would question anything involving deceptive pseudoscience like "biophotons" to prove your point (unless you hold a degree in physics), and I've never heard of stress causing metabolic acidosis. Stay skeptical!

      • Maria Minno Bisphophonates are supposed to have a half life in the body of over a decade, so it will take you many years to get rid of the stuff. Better never to take it, to drink raw milk and bone broth, and take cod liver oil instead.
