What I did to do this ride as put my mind to it .I was told I wouldn't make it. My family was very upset with me, and I don't blame them. It was crazy .That the Harley wouldn't make it. I was crazy, but I did make it and will continue to carry on .I did toast my bike My support truck was run out of oil, new brakes burned out I was almost run over by it I drained my bank account as my sponsor didn't come through. I did all the updates on the net interviews and phone calls I got about 3 hours of sleep on average a night. But as I rode along people did help me and with out them I would not have made it. I rode in minus 68 below Celsius 90.4 below zero F for hours on end froze my hands and burned the skin off my feet .Laid to bike down and slid across 2 lanes of traffic and almost was hit by a car. I am proud of the fact I made it and would do it again in fact I will.

Welcome and Thank You Global Music Canada, L.A Kidd Entertainment, Maddpadd Productions.

Now this is good news for all. Thank you Present Obama
President Obama told House Democrats Thursday that he will sign an executive order withdrawing limitations on federal funding ...

... for stem cell research. "I guarantee you that we will sign an executive order for stem cells," Obama said in response to a question from Rep. Jim Langevin (D-R.I.). Obama added, though, that he wants to work with the House and Senate to make the order solid, according to the pool report.

The remarks were made during a private question-and-answer session with members and confirmed by two sources.

Obama had suggested during a pre-inauguration interview that he might not use his executive authority to reverse the Bush-era limits on embryonic stem cell research, but might wait instead for Congress to change the policy.

The comments drew attention because Obama pledged during the campaign to lift the restrictions, and political observers had expected him to move quickly to reverse President Bush’s 2001 executive order.

"God gave us power to make smart decisions, to cure diseases, to alleviate suffering," Obama said in Virginia, according to one of the two sources

Now I have to say most of us in this group have been touched in one way or another by diabetes So its really important that we tell everybody we know and strangers too about this Silent Killer called Diabetes
I cant confirm it but from the facts that I have found on the web world wide Diabetes is now the Number 1 killer
Now I have to go and buy some more long johns to keep me warm Mike

Insulin was discovered in 1922 by Dr's Banting and Best
The way we test has come a long way but the end results are the same
Not much has changed
We need help
If your not a diabetic don't wait until you are
Please help give a voice to the silent killer
This ride is not for me Its for you Raise your VOICE
86 years of the same old treatment is getting stale

My name is Mike Cole
I am in the planning stages of Giving Diabetes a voice. I am forty six years of age. I became a "Type One" diabetic at the age of 8 going on 9.I have lived the ups and downs that come with being a diabetic. Living with diabetes for 38 years I have almost lost the fight a few times . I'm tired of fighting as so many others are .Together we can educate all those who we love and care of diabetes. Perhaps more structuring, resources and awareness could be available to diabetics and the public if we could possibly get more involvement of government funding. Many diabetics and public are not aware and don't know how bad and the side effects can be or what to expect. So I'm going to ride to each major city of each province which were named herein to raise the voice and ask for support for funding of the research and resource centers for educating diabetes. Each center I come into contact with during my ride I will be giving diabetes a voice.

Diabetes kills more people every year then Breast Cancer and Aids combined 4 times over.
1 out of 3 children born after the year 2000 will become a Diabetic.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has projected that over one-third of the children born after the year 2000 will develop diabetes sometime during their lifetime. If they happen to be Black, Hispanic, or Native American, the CDC projects that nearly 50% of the children will become diabetic. When you consider that diabetes is the leading cause of amputation, kidney failure, blindness, and neuropathy, the strain this projection will place on our health care system and society in general is tremendous. The answer is encouraging individuals to become proactive in protecting their health by firmly establishing these new, healthier lifestyles that improve insulin sensitivity.
In 2006 3,153,600 people died from Diabetes 6,307,200 became a Diabetic in the same year. In 2007 there was 253 million Diabetics.( New update ). By the year 2025 there will be 800,000,000 cases of Diabetes and IGT world wide if this doesn't scare you it should . Everyday this number grows check your resources on line through Diabetes websites and watch the statistics.

My perception about the ads you see on TV about blood meters . Blood meters only tell you what your blood sugar is, they don't prevent low and high life threatening sugars. In Canada blood meters are free but you have to buy the test strips about $100.00 per 100 . Most people can not buy insurance to cover the costs . My point is don't let the ads make you think that a blood meter is all you need to control your Diabetes. If you are a Diabetic, you do need a meter and test every day. Although your diabetes could be under good control you still will be at risk .I have been working hard with different agencies and hope to have some news to tell you soon. Again, I would like to thank you for joining in support and would like to ask you tell everyone about the group and why it is important for so many .
Please do take the time to view the sites and videos which are posted here. You will truly find them all informative. " My goal is a world voice for Diabetes."Mike

Eighty percent of diabetic patients today will die prematurely from a cardiovascular event like a heart attack, stroke, or a ruptured aneurysm. This was true in 1970 and is true today. In spite of all our medication and present treatments for diabetes, we have not been able to change this horrible statistic. Now its true that we are able to decrease the risk of what is referred to as micro-vascular disease like diabetic retinopathy and neuropathy. However, we have not been able to decrease the risk of major cardiovascular disease. Why is this happening ?

You will learn, our arteries begin aging much faster than they should as soon as you develop insulin resistance. It may be 10 to 15 years before you actually develop diabetes. Clinical trials have shown that the day a patient is diagnosed with diabetes 60% of them already have cardiovascular disease. Now that they are diabetic, their arteries will actually begin to age even faster. Physicians are behind the eight ball and are really intervening with their traditional treatments too late.

Info from Ray D.Strand,M.D. Specialist in Nutritional Medicine Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases to affect children. Every day more than 200 children are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, requiring them to take multiple daily insulin shots and monitor the glucose levels in their blood. It is increasing at a rate of 3% each year among children and rising even faster in pre-school children at a rate of 5% per year. Currently, over 500,000 children under the age of 15 live with diabetes.

For children in the developing world with type 1 diabetes, the picture is bleak. Close to 75,000 children in low-income and lower-middle income countries are living with diabetes in desperate circumstances. These children need life-saving insulin to survive. Even more children are in need of the monitoring equipment, test strips and education required to manage their diabetes and avoid the life-threatening complications associated with the disease. A child's access to appropriate medication and care should be a right not a privilege.

"The stark reality is that many children in developing countries die soon after diagnosis," said Dr Jean-Claude Mbanya, President-Elect of the International Diabetes Federation. "It's been 87 years since the discovery of insulin, yet many of the world's most vulnerable citizens, including many children, die needlessly because of lack of access to this essential drug. This is a global shame. We owe it to future generations to address this issue now."

In many developing countries, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa and some parts of Asia, life-saving diabetes medication and monitoring equipment is often unavailable or unaffordable. As a result, many children with diabetes die soon after diagnosis, or have poor control and quality of life, and develop the devastating complications of the disease early.

In order to support some of those children, the International Diabetes Federation created its Life for a Child Program in 2001. The program, which is operated in partnership with Diabetes Australia-NSW and HOPE worldwide, currently supports a total of 1000 children in Azerbaijan, Bolivia, The Democratic Republic of Congo, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Mali, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, The Philippines, Rwanda, Sri Lanka, Sudan, The United Republic of Tanzania, Uzbekistan and Zimbabwe.

"The 1000 children that we support represent a pitifully small number of those in need," said Dr. Silink, who co-founded the Program. "It seems unthinkable that diabetes care remains beyond the reach of so many. Solutions are available now to address the issues of affordability and accessibility. The means exist to strengthen health-care systems and provide the diabetes education of health-care professionals and the families of those affected by diabetes to make a significant step forward."

The timing of the London meeting is no accident, falling as it does just ahead of World Diabetes Day, November 14. The theme of the United Nations Health Day is diabetes in children and adolescents. The campaign led by the International Diabetes Federation with the endorsement of the World Health Organization sets out to establish the message that no child should die of diabetes.

The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) is an umbrella organization of over 200 member associations in more than 160 countries, advocating for the more than 250 million people with diabetes, their families, and their health-care providers. Its mission is to promote diabetes care, prevention and a cure worldwide. The International Diabetes Federation is an NGO in official relations with the World Health Organization and an associated NGO with the United Nations Department of Public Information. The International Diabetes Federation leads the World Diabetes Day and Unite for Diabetes campaigns. Additional information is available at http://www.idf.org

Mike,

One of my media sponsors, BikersWelcomeUSA.com and .tv sent me your group. It is exciting to see other riders with similar projects to mine. I am doing a 4500 Mile Ride for Charity, and social media fundraising experiment. We are supporting 10 charities with the ride, and I am about half way through (aprox 2500 miles so far). You can join our group called 4500 Mile Ride for Charity on Facebook and follow the ride there and through my blog, twitter (@ldidsbury) youtube channel (ldidsbury), facebook albums (/lawrence.didsbury) and a new flickr account (ldidsbury) I just set up.

I think what you are doing is awesome! Winter riding must have added additional challenges. I have done ALOT of rain and night riding, but I imagine snow and ice would be over the top for this Texas boy :) Keep the shiny side up!

Thank you to everyone and their fight for a cure. I bet my brother would have ridden his bike. Unfortunately Malcolm died in 2006. He was only 33 yrs old. Malcolm developed type 1 diabetes at the age of 5. Despite the fact that he suffered from this disease he believed in living life to the fullest. Malcolm was a free spirit. A real non-conformist who always did what he wanted and did it how he wanted. My brother went into diabetic shock. We didn't know that he had gone into shock and thought he just had the stomach flu. When he was taken to the hospital 3 days later he stopped breathing.

I MISS YOU and I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU

wow I have been humbled. Thank you so much for raising my awareness about diabetes. I remember years ago, one of the first fundraising I helped out, was for the diabetes association. A friend asked me to help and I was there. I had no idea really about this Silent Killer- and even after the fundraiser I didn't really understand. Then in one of my acting classes a met a very talented actor J.C. and he shared some of his experiences about his difficulties with his diabetes from a youngster to adult hood. I just met the humble Mike Cole, and had no idea what he has accomplished. I felt his goodness, and I thought I would check him out. Now I understand. May good health, strength and luck be on his side to continue his mission. The world needs more Michael Coles! Okay I am joining the VOICE. Let us all do as much as we can to help.
