Dear Class of 2013,
Congratulations and welcome to RISD! It’s almost September, and that means that it is almost time for Orientation!
Saturday, September 12th marks the first day of your RISD Orientation and the start of your RISD career. All first year students are invited to check into their residence halls starting at 8:30am. Staff will be on hand to assist you with move in until 2pm. Please make sure you have sent in your student ID photo and health form, these materials are required for you to live on campus.
Orientation for new students will officially kick-off at 1pm. Please make your travel arrangements accordingly. Signs and Orientation Leaders will be located around campus to direct you to the unloading and check-in areas for your specific residence hall. Residence Life will be sending you more detailed information about your specific check-in area and unloading location.
At check-in, you will receive a Welcome Packet containing your student ID, area maps, and most importantly, your Orientation Schedule. Once you have moved all of your belongings into your residence hall and received important Orientation information, you’re invited to eat at The Met, RISD’s main dining facility, conveniently located in the Quad. A Continental Breakfast will be served from 8am-11am and a full Welcome Brunch will be available from 11am-2pm.
At noon, the Offices of Multicultural Affairs and International Programs invite you and your family to the Ewing Multicultural Center from noon-1pm. You and your family will have a chance to interact with members of staff, meet others, have questions answered, and get a feel for the importance and celebration of diversity at RISD.
Orientation begins at 1pm. Say goodbye to your parents as you begin the many fun and exciting Orientation activities that this year’s Orientation Staff has planned. Orientation for first year students begins when you meet with your Orientation Leader (OL) and Orientation Group for the first time from 2pm-4pm. This will be followed by the official kickoff of the First Year Student Orientation as all first year students converge in the RISD Auditorium to be welcomed by and officially introduced to the Orientation 2009 Staff from 4pm-6pm.
For dinner, you are invited to meet, greet, and eat with your new class in The Met for Breaking Bread with OLs and Resident Assistants from 6pm-7pm. Immediately following dinner will be your first community meeting led by your RA from 7pm-8:30pm.
After your community meeting, you will have a little time to relax and unpack before First Night festivities commence in the Upper Quad at 9pm. First Night is the first official event of the year and a fun and friendly welcome to RISD. The Office of Student Life and the Orientation Staff collaborate to start the year off with a dynamic bang. Rain or shine, First Night is guaranteed to be an energy filled, festive start to the 2009-2010 year!
After a restful night’s sleep in your new home, Orientation activities will continue on Sunday, September 13th beginning with breakfast at The Met at 8am. Your detailed Orientation schedule provided at check-in will direct you to and from the events of the next three days.
The start of your days at RISD is almost here and we know how excited you are! If you have any questions about the start of Orientation on September 12th or any other questions about Orientation or RISD in general, please feel free to email us at orientation@risd.edu. We look forward to meeting you! See you in September!
Sincerely,
Dani Cox, Program Orientation Leader
