OUR NEW PLANS

During the last election campaign nearly 15 000 of us have shown support for the concept of vote swapping - not necessarily because it's what we want to do, but because it's what we have to do under the current electoral system. If you're sick of feeling like your vote is wasted, if it boggles your mind that the Tories could come close to a majority with only 36 or 37% of the... (read more)

Hi everyone,

The election is over and Harper has won a minority. This group was set up to oppose a Harper majority so on that level we must be satisfied. Yet the number of 'wasted votes' was tremendous and the NDP, Greens, and Liberals have all finished with a smaller share of the seats than their popular vote.

I want to thank everyone that got involved. Because of vote swapping, we've managed to raise the profile of electoral reform and if everyone pushes onwards, perhaps we'll be able to create some real pressure for change.

To give you some idea of how vote swapping effected this election, we can say that we significantly contributed to two ridings that were won against the Conservatives.

In Esquimalt Juan de Fuca, the Liberal candidate managed to edge out Conservative Tony DeSouza by only 68 votes. 50% of those 68 votes came about from vote swapping! Well we didn't 'swing' the riding, we would have if the contest had been much closer.

Similarly, we helped the NDP win a seat in Edmonton Strathcona. The margin of victory there was only 442 (NDP candidate Linda Duncan over Tory Rahim Jaffer). In total, 110 of those votes were swappers, accounting for roughly one quarter of the margin of victory. Again - had the race been any closer you would have made the difference.

Those two ridings were helped about by both our group, and the non-partisan votepair.ca. That's a massive achievement for everyone that joined this group, either just as a supporter or as a registered vote swapper.

Let's ensure that we don't need to go to such lengths the next time around - get out there and get involved with your preferred party and most importantly, PRESSURE FOR ELECTORAL REFORM! With proportional representation, we wouldn't have to vote swap...

We are now launching the next step - pressure for ELECTORAL REFORM. It might sound strange to come from us, but vote swapping is nothing but a band-aid solution for the massive wound that is the First Past the Post System. If we really want to heal Canada's democracy, we need to achieve electoral reform. Stay tuned to get involved and help us achieve a more equitable and sensible voting system!

Thanks everyone for your amazing support!!

OUR PETITION ///////////////////////////

PETITION FOR A PROPORTIONAL REPRESENTATION ELECTORAL REFORM

TO THE HOUSE OF COMMONS IN PARLIAMENT ASSEMBLED

We, the undersigned residents of Canada, draw the attention of the House to the following:

1.THAT, all Canadian voters should have an equal say in how parliament is comprised.

2.THAT, to truly achieve the principle of one person equals one vote, we need electoral reform in Canada and a shift to proportional representation.

3.THAT, Section 15. (1) of The Canadian Charter of Rights And Freedoms that states «Every individual is equal before and under the law and has the right to the equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination», each Canadian voters should have the democratic right to be equally represented in the House of Commons.

4.THAT, Section 3. of The Canadian Charter Of Rights And Freedoms constitutionally guarantees all Canadian citizens the democratic right to vote but continues to deny access to the right of each individual to meaningful participation due to the inherent flaws in our current electoral system, referred to as a «first past the post system», which does not permit an equal representation of Canadian voters.

5.THAT, there are no democratic reasons why every political party should not be equally entitled to win the same amount of seats in the House of Commons with the same amount of popular votes.

6.THAT, each election that passes we see political parties capable of winning a majority of the seats in the House of Commons with a minority of the votes, which falsely represents voters' intentions.

7.THAT, to truly enforce a democratic electoral system, no political party should win the majority of the seats in the House of Commons without a majority of the votes.

THEREFORE, your undersigned petitioners call upon Parliament to change the Canada Elections Act and modify the basis of our electoral system by including a proportional representation method. This electoral reform should not be decided by referendum but by national public consultations to find the best proportional representation method for Canadian citizens, directed by a Royal Commission. This Royal Commission should have the objective to “ensure that each Canadian voter has an equal right to be represented in Parliament”. The board of Commissioners should ask a group of political experts, independent experts and citizens, from all political allegiances, to find the best proportional representation electoral reform recommendations, based on the statement of grievance of this petition. Then, the Canadian Government should modify the Canada Election Act according to the recommendations of this Royal Commission, to the benefit of all Canadians.
