- Sept. 18, 2009: There are 26 co-sponsors so far! To see if your representatives/senators are among them or not, use the "Thomas" link below, click the circle to search by bill number and type in "HR2819." Then click on "cosponsors." To check senators, go back to HR 2819 and click the link from there to S1244 and click on "cosponsors" there. http://thomas.loc.gov/
August 7, 2009: The total number of sponsors is up to 18 in the House and five in the Senate! The bills remain in committee.
July 12: Senator Jeff Merkley, the original sponsor in the Senate, offered the Breastfeeding Promotion Act as an amendment to the Senate Health Committee health care reform bill and it was accepted! While it may not make the final cut, this is tremendous progress! The D.C. Breastfeeding Coalition promises to let us know when it is time to start contacting our senators to ask that the Breastfeeding Promotion Act remain a part of the final version of the health care reform bill, which I believe is S. 486.
What you can do now in under one minute: Use this easy tool from the U.S. Breastfeeding Committee to send automated emails (with the USBC letter or better yet your own words) to your representatives and senators asking them to co-sponsor the bill: http://org2.democracyinaction.org/o/5162/t/6359/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=1697 Just type in your name and address including zip code+4. Or you can call or write a letter!
What else can you do? Use Facebook to spread the word through the "Invite People to Join" link in the upper right sidebar. Post on your status that you hope your friends will join. Encourage them to ask their elected officials to co-sponsor the bill.
As of June 14, 2009, the bill is before three House committees: House Ways and Means, House Energy and Commerce, and House Education and Labor. In the Senate the bill has been referred to the Committee on Finance. If you have one or more representatives or senators on the committees you can ask them to support the Act.
The Breastfeeding Promotion Act of 2009 (HR2819) was introduced by Representative Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) and Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR) on June 11, 2009. This is the fifth time the bill has been up for consideration and it needs your support now!
