- Rick has some very real, tangible, and immediate needs that can only be cured by cash.
We are working on a comprehensive and reinvigorated business plan to ensure the long-term viability of The Doodle.

***UPDATE*** Some have asked where is the exchange between the Tyco owner/Doodle landlord and Doodle supporters referenced in the YDN. It's on the "Boycott Tyco to help save the Doodle" group site. Look in the recent news and wall sections. Link: http://yale.facebook.com/group.php?gid=8657901657
***UPDATE*** We received the following email from Rick Beckwith, owner of the Doodle: "First, I'd like to thank every one of you involved with saving The Doodle. I never imagined the impact closing The Doodle would have on people. I knew it was loved by many, but had no idea how much! The response has been overwhelming. Again, it's something I never imagined would happen. I've struggled the past couple of years to keep The Doodle open because I couldn't bear the thought of bringing the tradition to a close and ending something great that my grandfather started and my father continued after him. But it had become too much of a financial strain, and I couldn't keep it up. I had given up hope that it could be saved, but it's obvious to me now that I just needed some help with it. I am grateful to all of you and want more than anything to "Save The Doodle" too! I'm certain we can do this together, making it even better, without losing any of the qualities you love about it. Thanks for all of your support, action, encouragement, and kind words. The Doodle customers are the best people on Earth."

*** UPDATE *** Our estimate is that the cost of rental payments and necessary renovations is about $100,000. The renovations are required because the Doodle was built for building codes in 1950, not today's more stringent standards. For example, current code requires central heating, which the Doodle does not have. We are also mindful that the renovations need to be done in such a way as to protect the historical character of this New Haven treasure, which makes the project more costly. For these reasons, renovations are behind the vast majority of the $100,000 cost needed to reopen the Doodle.

*** UPDATE ***
We need to people with expertise in the following areas who will volunteer:
1) a lawyer who can establish a fund/trust to accept donations
2) a tax accountant who can provide us with some tax advice
3) a lawyer who will review The Doodle's lease
Email if you will help: save.ourdoodle@gmail.com
Rick and The Doodle need volunteers who will DO what needs to be done, not who will simply point out what needs to be done.
