Please join us for an exciting program opportunity at Colgate! The Office of Vice President for Diversity has organized a valuable program and strongly encourages our Alumni of Color population to consider attending.

The inaugural Diversity Week scheduled for September 16-19, 2009 with the theme of "Race and Culture in the 21st Century" is designed to define diversity as a major component of academic excellence through intellectual discussions, lectures, keynotes, intriguing exchanges, an award ceremony, and cultural activities.

Hamilton Central School youth will collaborate with Austin, Texas artist Brian "Bydeeman" Joseph to create a mural designed to exhibit inclusion in a positive, colorful, friendly and joyful way.

Diversity Leadership Awards Presentation
Alumni of Color Distinguished Service Award
This award is presented to a current or former Colgate faculty member whose teaching, research, mentoring, and service has been instrumental in the success of students of color at Colgate University. The recipient of this award will be someone whose work and commitments have advanced the key value of inclusivity at Colgate and have enhanced the educational experience for students of color at Colgate. The winner(s) of this award is selected by the leadership of the Alumni of Color organization in consultation with the Provost.

Rebecca S. Chopp Diversity Achievement Award
The Rebecca S. Chopp Diversity Achievement Award is presented in recognition of the outstanding diversity leadership provided by Colgate's 15th President, who understood that "diversity as an objective for Colgate covers policy and culture, global and domestic aspirations, justice, and vision throughout the institution" and that "preparation for the global society means more women, minorities, and international students are fundamental assets for institutions such as Colgate." Up to two Rebecca S. Chopp Diversity Achievement Awards may be given annually, one to a student and one to a faculty or staff member whose passion and work to engage in the global vision that is diversity has made a difference on our campus. The recipients of this award are noteworthy for their outstanding leadership character, compelling moral operating principles and strong commitment to cultural competence and inclusivity. The winners of this award are selected by the Diversity Leadership Awards Selection Committee.

Inclusive Community Festival
The Festival will be a major celebration of diversity and culture on the village green in the Village of Hamilton, New York. The Festival will be highlighted by a Bydee Parade around the town led by Brian "Bydeeman" Joseph, artist, author, poet and motivational speaker.


2. Call for Nominations: Alumni of Color Distinguished Service Award

Alumni of Color have the opportunity to recognize the dedicated service of a Colgate faculty member. This award will be presented to a current or former Colgate faculty member whose teaching, research, mentoring, and service have been instrumental in the success of students of color at Colgate University. The recipient of this award will be someone whose work and commitments have advanced the key value of inclusivity at Colgate and enhanced the educational experience for students of color at Colgate. The winner(s) of this award will be selected by the leadership of the Alumni of Color organization in consultation with the Provost. The AOC Distinguished Service Award will be presented on Friday evening during Diversity Week.
