DNC intern Laura Britton recaps the press conference with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and progressive youth groups announcing benefits of health reform to young Americans.
This afternoon, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi held a press conference with Representatives Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) and Kathy Dahlkemper (D-PA) to announce a victory for young people that will be included in the final House health reform bill: a provision allowing young Americans to stay on their parents’ insurance through the age of 26. Representatives from Rock the Vote, Young Invincibles Want Change, and Campus Progress spoke on behalf of all young Americans, stressing the need for this provision. Young Democrats from 30 states also attended the event. A young woman who was diagnosed with thyroid cancer at 22 and Crohn’s disease at 26 shared a personal and heartbreaking account of her 6-year struggle to find and keep a health insurance provider. Had her health coverage under her father’s plan extended until age 26, she would know for sure if she is cancer-free and her credit cards would not be maxed out due to the high cost of medications and tests necessary to her survival.
Because of exorbitant health care costs and youthful feelings of invincibility, Americans ages 19-26 have the highest uninsured rate of any age group in the U.S. population. During the first few years following college graduation, few young people are lucky enough to be provided health coverage by their employer. Speaker Pelosi and the other speakers stressed that the health insurance reform bill must provide an affordable option to ease the burden on taxpayers and to prevent young people from being buried under medical debt. Speaker Pelosi noted that this extension of health coverage will allow young Americans to pursue their dreams rather than to let the attainment of health coverage steer their job search. She was confident that the final bill will be ready by Thanksgiving.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 17, 2009
Statement from the President on House Passage of Historic Education Reform Bill
I want to thank the House of Representatives for the progress they made today on the reforms I’ve proposed to strengthen higher education and our early education system. Today, the House delivered a historic set of reforms to the financial aid system that will offer relief to students and families. This bill will end the billions upon billions of dollars in unwarranted subsidies that we hand out to banks and financial institutions, and will use that money to guarantee access to low-cost loans, and strengthen Pell Grants and Perkins loans that make college more affordable. This bill also follows through on our plan to shore up our community college system, simplifies the complicated financial aid forms to make it easier for students to apply for and get the help they need, and will strengthen standards and improve outcomes in early learning programs. I look forward to signing these reforms into law.

DNC’s Democratic Change Commission Invites People From Across the Country to Submit Their Ideas for Changes to Presidential Nominating Process
DNC Chairman Tim Kaine, along with Congressman James E. Clyburn (D-SC) and Senator Claire McCaskill (D-MO), co-chairs of the Democratic Change Commission, invited people from across the nation to assist the Change Commission by submitting their suggestions and ideas for making changes to the presidential nominating process via the Commission’s website, http://bit.ly/144A2y, by Friday, August 21, 2009.
These suggestions will be discussed at the next Change Commission meeting to be held Saturday, August 29, 2009 at the Crowne Plaza St. Louis-Downtown Hotel in St. Louis, Missouri.
The Democratic Change Commission was established last year and is tasked with recommending changes to the Party’s 2012 presidential nominating process. It is charged with addressing three issues: 1) changing the window of time during which primaries and caucuses may be held 2) reducing the number of superdelegates and 3) improving the caucus system. The Commission must issue its report and recommendations to the DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee no later than January 1, 2010.
Chairman Kaine said, “America was founded in order to create a government that is of, for and by the people and what developed is one of the strongest democracies in history. Our election system is fundamental to the strength of our democracy and of our country as a whole. That’s why the Change Commission aims to make sure the Presidential nominating process is as inclusive as possible and why we are asking people to submit their thoughts and ideas and be a part of the process.”
Congressman Clyburn said, “As the Change Commission studies these three issues, we are interested in hearing recommendations from folks across the country. We encourage voters to submit their thoughts as we work to make the process of selecting our nominee as inclusive and accessible as possible.”
Senator McCaskill said, “In this last election, we saw an unprecedented level of involvement and interest in the Democratic Presidential Nominating Process. We hope voters will maintain their enthusiasm and help us determine how best to prepare for future elections.”
Information provided to the Commission via the website by Friday, August 21, 2009 will be distributed to the Commission members at their upcoming meeting on August 29 in St. Louis, Missouri. The meeting is open to the public and press. Details on the meeting location are below:

IV. Support Recognition of the Young Democrats at Liberty University
Liberty University recently chose to disband their Virginia Young Democrats chartered college chapter, citing "The Democratic Party Platform is contrary to the mission of LU and to Christian doctrine," and "By using LU or Liberty University and Democrat in the name, the two are associated and the goals of both run in opposite directions."
They also cite "The Democratic Party Platform is contrary to the mission of LU and to Christian doctrine (supports abortion, federal funding of abortion, advocates repeal of the federal Defense of Marriage Act, promotes the "LGBT" agenda, Hate Crimes, which include sexual orientation and gender identity, socialism, etc). The candidates this club supports uphold the Platform and implement it. The candidates supported are directly contrary to the mission of LU."
Vice President of Student Affairs, Mark Hine demanded in their disbandment that they "cease using Liberty University's name, including any logo, seal or mark of Liberty University. They are not to be used in any publications, electronic or internet, including but not limited to, any website, Facebook, Twitter or any other such publication."
Show Mark Hine and Liberty University that we stand by the LU Young Democrats and the actions taken by Liberty and their officials are reprehensible and every student deserves a place on college campuses.
Sign this petition and let Liberty know their Young Democrats have your support!

Washington, DC—The DNC Youth Council, the party’s official youth coalition, congratulates Virginia Governor Tim Kaine on his selection as the new Chair of the Democratic National Committee.
"As Governor of Virginia, Tim Kaine has taken the lead on issues critical to our nation’s youth such as expanding access to higher education, keeping schools and universities safe for students and preserving a healthy environment. His enthusiasm and dedication to the advancement of the Democratic Party make him a natural choice to help continue the success of the 2008 election cycle. About the DNC Youth Council:
The Democratic National Committee’s Youth Coordinating Council (Youth Council) was formally constituted as a council of the DNC in December 2005.
