Mr. Yaqub Mehrnehaad is a brave, young, Iranian Baloch, civil rights activist, father of three children, and founder and chairman of an NGO organisation called “Voice of Justice Youth Association” (Javaanaane Sedaaye Edaalat).
He was sentenced to death by Iranian Revolutionary Court in Balochistan in february 2008 and is under imminent threat of being executed.
Seeking civil and cultural rights for Baloch people, “Voice of Justice Youth Association” is a formally recognised and registered NGO under the Islamic Regime’s regulations in Balochistan. The organisation uses peaceful activities, for example, arranging annual open discussion meetings with Balochistan provincial authorities to bring discrimination to their attention.

On the 26th of April, 2007, in Dozaap (Zahedan), the provincial capital of Balochistan, the Iranian secret agencies arrested Mr. Mehrnehaad, his 16-year-old brother, and the Central Committee members of the above organisation directly after the end of an open discussion meeting named “Asking Youth and Responding Authorities”. All were alleged to be enemies of Islam and working with Western powers to destabilize the Iranian Islamic Regime. Nobody was aware of their whereabouts for nine months. Finally, all were released except for Mr. Mehrnehaad who was kept in Tehran under harsh mental and physical torture. Recently, he was transferred back to Balochistan and he was sentenced to death in a secret trial.

Mr. Yaqub Mehrnehaad is a well-known, Baloch civil rights activist amongst Iranian civil rights activists and has been delivering speeches defending the human and civil rights of the Iranian people in universities and provincial capitals throughout Iran.

With our deepest sense of urgency, we kindly appeal to you to do whatever is possible to spare this young civil rights activist from imminent execution at the hands of the Iranian regime. We appeal to the international community, human rights organisations, and civil rights activists in the world to call upon the Iranian government to remove the death penalty and immediately release Mr Yaqub Mehrnehaad. We appeal for the release of all imprisoned social, cultural and political activists and an end to the inhuman penalties of amputation and stoning to death for Baloch and other people in Iran.
