Mission Accomplished!!!
Our objectives: The officers of this Facebook site organized this opportunity as a public forum to both (1) inform our readers of the true facts of a sexual assault and judicial case which led to a lawsuit against the University of the Pacific and more important, (2) to call attention to and correct the erroneous information being publicly promulgated by a Dr. John Foubert.
From March through August 2009, Dr. Foubert has conducted an intensive negative campaign with daily postings on another Facebook site, emails to persons all over the country, submissions to a large number of listservs and blogs, a letter to a Listserv of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), a personal letter sent to each member of the NASPA leadership, and many, many other email communications.
Many of you have asked why he is engaging in this campaign of attack and negativity. We do not fully know the answer to this except for his admissions that he is in contact with the plaintiff and her attorney in the lawsuit .
Active management of this site is now winding down: We believe we have accomplished our above two objectives, with remarkable success. We want to thank everyone who has contributed their thoughts. With the advent of the approaching new academic year, we students are discontinuing active management of this site to get ready for the semester ahead.
What we have accomplished:
1.The true facts of the case Jane Doe v the University of the Pacific have been put forward here by students, many of us who knew the students involved. These facts have corrected erroneous statements by John Foubert and others, who have no direct knowledge of the case.
2.We believe because of our efforts here, John Foubert has recanted and/or discontinued making many, but not all, of his erroneous statements. For example, he seems to be no longer asserting previous statements of his that Jane Doe was given a date rape drug, that the male students were suspects in a previous sexual assault prior to Jane Doe’s case, that the University allowed the male students to remain on campus after they were charged by judicial affairs, and that we and the University itself were indifferent to Jane Doe. We trust that our statements have been helpful to everyone’s understanding of the true facts of this case, as helping others to know the Truth has been our objective from the beginning.
3.While #1 and #2 are our most important accomplishments, we also hope that John Foubert may have learned a little about appropriate and respectful discourse. Over the course of these few months, we have seen him begin to engage in dialogue and become less rancorous in his responses to us. Despite his false charges otherwise (see his comments earlier on this site), our postings have always been respectful and we have purposefully not engaged in the sarcasm and name calling that characterized some of his comments. We were concerned when he wrote a personal email to one of us entering a graduate program in student affairs telling him to “cease and desist” and threatening him that “the world of student affairs is small.” We wondered at his blocking us from his facebook site so we could not see his comments or responses to our posts. However, we were glad to see that following our comments, Dr. Foubert discontinued using Oklahoma State University in his tagline, as persons at Oklahoma State have written that they do not want him representing their university.
4.Finally, we were very amused by Dr. Foubert’s comments that we might be advised by University attorneys. We assure you that none of us has been advised by University attorneys—not one of us. This site and all of our comments have all been student-run and student-contributed, and we think the attorneys have something better to do with their time. But we value the compliment!
What’s next:
The University of the Pacific is offering a daylong SYMPOSIUM ON SEXUAL VIOLENCE ON October 29. We invite everyone (including John Foubert) to attend and participate in this important opportunity to learn and work together! At a later time, we will link this page to the webpage for the Symposium so you can learn more about it.
We also look forward to following the lawsuit in the months ahead. When the lawsuit comes to trial, we will attend and report here on the proceedings. We continue to believe that this case is best argued in a court of law and not in the court of Facebook – so, having stated the true facts that we know, we will now become inactive on this site except for the occasional posting, update, or link to other sites. Thank you for your time and attention to reading about and knowing the Truth about the case Jane Doe v the University of the Pacific.
