Do It Legally is a campaign to promote legal alternatives to illegal music, movie and media downloading. We want to educate you about the potential consequences of copyright infringement. But, we also want to give you lots of legal options for getting your media and make it easy for you to "Do It Legally!"
Reference this group often to hear about the events and activities we are involved in, as well as stay updated about relevant news regarding illegal file-sharing. You can also use our group as a forum to learn about and discuss legal options for downloading media.
**DID YOU KNOW?**
• Being caught and punished for downloading illegally on the UGA network is a real possibility. In fact, the RIAA actively seeks violators on university networks.
• While UGA is not seeking out its own students, by law, it has no choice but to provide your information to the RIAA if you are found in violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act using the UGA network.
• In past RIAA lawsuits against UGA students, students often settled before going to trial. However, even a settlement can still cost you around $2,000-6,000.
• If you live in the dorms or use the computers in the SLC to get music illegally, you are using the university’s resources to download copyrighted material. Not only is this against the law, but it is also a violation of the UGA Code of Conduct.
**THE GOOD NEWS IS...**
• There is a legal alternative to fit everyone's music needs. Whether you like to preview music before buying a CD, download your music to an MP3 player or simply listen to music online, there is a cheap, legal, safe—and sometimes free!—way for you to get your music.
• There really are viable legal alternatives that are fun to use. There are millions of songs available for you to legally download online! UGA has even partnered with Ruckus to bring the free, listen-online service to all its students.
• Legal alternatives are a great way to learn about new music! Many allow you to browse by category or find songs similar to those you have already downloaded or purchased. Some programs even allow you to see what your friends are listening to through shared playlists and suggestions.
