World Languages Day is a free all-day event that allows high school students to learn about world languages and cultures in a university setting.
Students, teachers, and parents visit campus for a full day of fun sessions and activities that allow them to explore areas of the world they want to know more about (or may never have heard of!).
This group is specifically linked to the World Languages Day at Michigan State University (MSU), but the concept can be (and has been) replicated in many educational settings, from high schools to universities and community colleges.
The most recent MSU event brought 750 participants, presenters, and volunteers to campus for a day-long conference on world cultures and languages, globalization, the importance of learning foreign languages, and the positive impact knowledge of other languages can have on future career paths. Participants chose from over 90 sessions taught by MSU faculty, graduate students, and community members on topics as diverse as:
- Irish dance: Past, present, and future
- Extinction is not just for dinosaurs: Languages on the brink
- A Quinta do Caranguejo (and other tidbits of Brazilian culture)
- Bongoflava: Hip hop music of Swahili-speaking East Africa
- Poetry slam auf Deutsch!
- Survival Indonesian: From Borneo to Bali!
- Armavirumque Monstro: Life in the Imperial Roman Army
- Ebonics and hip hop ain’t just slang!
- The role of language analysts in the FBI today
- Silence is golden: A crash course in American Sign Language
