- This group is to make known Crystal Castles used art from other people, not giving them any credit and breaking the associated Creative Commons licenses. If you think Creative Commons is important to protect your work, you should be seriously concerned.
So far there are at least 5 claims of stealing artwork:
The first one was a 'madonna' drawing used by Crystal Castles on T-Shirts and a record cover.
Since then, there have been several Crystal Castles tracks that were found to have sampled sections of the chiptune artists Lo-bat, Covox and X-agon. Some of these tracks have been released commercially. Even in the cases where the songs were not commercially released, the artist and record label did not respect the Creative Common clauses for crediting the artist and making the track available under the same license. They never even attempted to contact the artists. Here is a list of tracks known to contain samples and, in some cases, large portions of audio from chiptune artists.
1. Crystal Castles- "Mother Knows Best" (Released on the "Health Split" 7 inch vinyl, Lovepump United records.)
Lo-Bat- "Tizzy" (Released under Creative Commons)
Notes: large parts of Lo-bat's song are used with some pitching and added vocals and possibly drums.
Song also contains some drum samples of Covox.
2. Crystal Castles- "Love and Caring" (Released on the "Health" full length CD.)
Covox- "Sunday" (Released under Creative Commons on his website)
Notes: Very unique and signature drum samples from the Covox song. These same samples are used in several Crystal Castles songs.
3. Crystal Castles- "Insecticon" (Unreleased)
Lo-Bat- "My Little Droid Needs a Hand" (Released under Creative Commons)
Notes: large parts of Lo-bat's song are used with some pitching and added vocals and possibly drums.
Song also contains some drum samples of Covox.
4. Crystal Castles- "Bitter Hearts" (Unreleased)
Lo-Bat- "My Little Droid Needs a Hand" (Released under Creative Commons)
Notes: large parts of Lo-bat's song are used with some pitching
5. Crystal Castles remix of the band Comic Book Fever- "TV Baby" (Unreleased)
X-agon- "Lamerina" (Released under Creative Commons on 8bitpeoples.com.
Notes: A very obvious and signature section from the X-agon song appears several times throughout the song.
6. Crystal Castles- "Chess Mess" (Unreleased)
Lo-Bat- "My Little Droid Needs a Hand" (Released under Creative Commons)
Notes: large parts of Lo-bat's song are used with some pitching
7. Crystal Castles- "Vids Kids" (unreleased)
Lo-Bat- "Tizzy" (Released under Creative Commons)
Notes: The song is just a slightly changed version of lo-bat's track. Song also contains some drum samples of Covox.
After some of this came to light, the band's management changed the credit on their myspace for the song "Insecticon" to read "Crystal Castles Vs. Lo-bat."
