Following the decision taken by the prefect of Loire-Atlantique and Morbihan (« Départements », that is « Districts », of Western France) to authorize by an order the destruction of sacred ibises (Threskionis aethiopicus) by members of the ONCFS (National Office for Hunting and Wildlife), the Association for the Defense of the Sacred Ibis in Brittany invites you to join its action.
The planed destruction of the sacred ibises will be done by "rifle shootings, through approaching and lying in wait of adult birds".
However, this species figures on the list of the strictly protected birds of Europe after the Bern Convention, annex II, and is also classified in the C category, what integrate them in the very official list of « France's birds ».
Moreover, this decision is based on a 2005 report by the INRA (Research in Agronomy) and ONFCS in which the authors themselves admit that the state of knowledge concerning the behavior of this species is quite incomplete and could be an enough reason for delaying the decision of an intervention.
On the account of the precaution principle, we ask for the abolition of this order. Actually, without a serious and complete study of impact the presence of this species could have on the biodiversity of our environment, the most radical solution taken by this order is unacceptable. We know moreover that the Ministry of environment has refused to take such a decision.
For these reasons, the Association for the Defense of the Sacred Ibis in Brittany, created in Vannes, Brittany, asks for your support.
