Welcome to the Sustainable Portsmouth Group. In 2008, the Portsmouth City Council asked Portsmouth Listens to create a process to develop a citizen-led sustainability vision and five year plan for the city.
Here’s how we’ll do it:
1. Create a fall event November 21st attended by a large cross-section of residents, which uses deliberative democracy techniques to create a vision of a sustainable city.
2. Put the resulting citizen energy to work in further rounds of study circles to write a plan in the spring.
3. Set up citizen groups across Portsmouth’s many neighborhoods to carry out the plan and measure results starting in 2010.
You can be part of this pioneering effort at the Portsmouth High School November 21st 2009 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Working in small groups, you and fellow residents will discuss what a sustainable Portsmouth looks like to you – your family, your business, your home, your neighborhood. After lunch, the themes developed by the groups will be presented, shared, and discussed. Then you and everyone at this assembly will prioritize the themes you feel are most important..
Why a community based effort? It’s simple: 2% of our city’s carbon footprint is from municipal government, and 98% is from all of us!
