Cyrano de Bergerac: free film screening with Art After Hours
[1 November at 2pm; Art Gallery of NSW: Domain Theatre, Lower Level 3]
The Art Gallery of New South Wales is showing Jean-Paul Rappeneau’s film version of Edmond Rostand’s famous play Cyrano de Bergerac as a part of its celebration of European romanticism. Rappeneau has painstakingly recreated the period in this lavish, emotionally charged tour de force – one of the most popular French films of the 1990s. Swordsman and poet, Cyrano (Gerard Depardieu) harbours a deep love for his cousin, Roxanne (Anne Brochet). However, his features are deformed by a large nose which, he fears, will ruin any chance of gaining her affections. A romantic story of unrequited love, the film is a wry, swash-buckling adventure with outstanding performances from Depardieu and Brochet.

Week 13 Semester 2 News!
Bonjour les amis!
This is our last week of semester two for 2009, so why not come along to one last FrenchSoc event? This week we have another Café Rendezvous at Petit Tarte (where we’ll be announcing winners and giving prizes for our Participez competition, so be sure to come!), as well as our usual conversation groups and study group. Don’t miss out on your weekly dose of all things French!

Conversation groups will be running again this week, Monday through Thursday from 1-2pm at the Manning backcourt (i.e. behind Manning). Enjoy a FREE coffee courtesy of Frenchsoc, have a chat and practice your French with other students (local and international!) Look out for the French flag and some of our friendly exec in our navy Frenchsoc t-shirts. If it’s raining don’t forget to check inside!
Study group

Come along to our final study group for semester this Monday to do some homework or study for exams. It’s a great opportunity to stop procrastinating and get some help from more advanced students, with the added bonus a free coffee, courtesy of FrenchSoc!

Art historian and passionate Parisian, Sandrine Voillet, uncovers some of the hidden delights of the City of Lights in this three-part series. This UK documentary is in both English and French, with English subtitles, and is showing on SBS at 7:30pm on Fridays 17th, 23rd, & 30th.
Synopsis:
In the first episode, Sandrine reveals how Paris battled through turmoil and trauma to become the city of dreams. In Blood and Chocolate, the second episode, she reveals the secret history and hidden delights of Paris, exploring winemaking, chocolate, cafés and some of the city's landmarks. In the third episode, Bohemian Rhapsody, Sandrine takes a look beyond the glittering surface of Paris, at the underground worlds and movements that defined the city in the 20th century.

Silent Film Festival
Australia’s Silent Film Festival is continuing on October 24 & 25 at the State Library of NSW, Macquarie Street, Sydney. The festival will feature Georges Méliès: First Wizard of Cinema (France 1896-1912) in its closing session on the 25th. Unfortunately our Film Screening of ‘Russian Dolls’ which was planned for this coming Tuesday the 6th of October has been moved to Week 11 on Tuesday the 13th of October, so settle back into uni life next week then in Week 11 join us at the screening of this classic French film!

Boomerang Australia Studies is a French organisation that advises French, Italian and South American students about study opportunities in Australia. It holds monthly get togethers for its students (80% French) and Australian students to catch up around a drink and share their experiences in Australia: These are called “Cooee on Tuesdays” and the one on October 13th is themed around Australian beers. ‘So Frenchy So Chic’ live at the Factory

The So Frenchy So Chic albums have sold over 90,000 copies and have introduced to Australians artists such as Camille, Emilie Simon and Nouvelle Vague.
