- STOPPING HARASSING PHONE CALLS
Obscene or harassing phone calls can be one of the most stressful and frightening invasions of privacy a person experiences.
WHAT MAKES A PHONE CALL HARASSING?
Callers may use obscene or threatening language, breathe heavily or remain silent to intimidate you. Conversations may be inappropriate in nature and callers may seem to know you or claim to have a mutual friend. The important thing to remember is that if the caller makes you feel uncomfortable or unsafe in any way, you are receiving a harassing phone call.
HOW OFTEN DO I HAVE TO GET THESE CALLS TO MAKE IT HARASSMENT?
Just one unwelcome call can be harassing.
WHAT SHOULD I DO WHEN I GET A HARASSING CALL?
Realize that most callers do not know who you are. He/she may have gotten your information from a website such as myspace or facebook.
First, remove ALL personal information from ALL internet sites. This includes addresses (including the name of your campus residence i.e. Heron Hall), telephone numbers (cell phone and residence phone), and birthdates.
Second, most callers simply want to play games at your expense. Hang up the phone immediately. If you do not play along, most callers will stop calling after one or two attempts.
If caller ID shows an UNKNOWN or WITHHELD number, do not answer it. If the caller needs to speak with you, he/she will leave a message.
WHO SHOULD I CONTACT WHEN I GET HARASSING CALLS?
It is a good idea to report harassing phone calls whether you only receive one call or dozens. Call Campus Security immediately if you suspect you have received a harassing phone call. Write down the number, dates, and times of the calls.
