- The Conservative's Bill C-391 would eliminate 7 million firearm records and allow people to anonymously purchase rifles. It's not worth the risk.
The US, Australia, and almost every country in Europe require rifles to be registered when they are sold. They realize that a license alone isn't enough. A license doesn't provide any paper trail as to who bought which firearm.
While the Canadian online licensing and registration system was expensive to set up, it works now, and cutting the rifle registry would save less than $9 million a year.
Why do countries support registration for all guns.
1) Firearm registrations allows the government to ensure that gun sellers are checking licenses and not selling to criminals or those without licenses.
2) Firearm registrations holds people with licenses who buy firearms for others accountable as initial owners can be tracked.
3) Firearm registrations makes it easier to remove firearms from an individual who has lost their license by providing authorities a list of which firearms the purchaser owns.
4) Firearm registration provide information to police when attending incidents of domestic violence to help prepare them for possible firearms.
5) Firearm registration allows police to track stolen firearms when they are recovered.
Registration and property ownership are common place in society.
When cars are sold, sellers and buyers are required to register their vehicles. When property is bought or sold, the owners must show proof of title. In communities, pets and dogs are required to be registered. Registration proved ownership and also keeps accountability.
Eliminating the firearms registry is not worth the risk.
