EcoTrotters.com, a new EcoTourism portal and online social travel community that provides recommendations for ecovacations and eco travel, launches its open beta site today. The EcoTrotters community brings travelers interested in ecotourism together, so they may share ideas, suggestions,and travel tips among each other. It is devoted to providing information to eco travelers interested in personal growth,volunteering, and learning new ways to combine ecology and travel. EcoTrotters focuses on green hotels and activities that promote responsible ecotravel, and includes programs that
minimize the negative aspects of conventional tourism on the environment, in addition to enhancing the cultural integrity of locals.

EcoTrotters began development in late 2007 with the intention of helping travelers make more informed decisions when booking an ecohotel. Once publicly launched, the site aims to provide travelers with trustworthy eco hotel recommendations written by other site users who, as travelers interested in ecotourism, share similar tastes and preferences.

What sets EcoTrotters apart from other Travel 2.0 sites is its dedication to ecotourism. Its goal is to create a transparent ecotourism rating system, based on a list of eco guidelines for hotels. In order for a hotel to be listed as an eco hotel on the site, it must offer a certain number of eco characteristics. As long as a hotel complies with the eco guidelines, it may be listed on the site, whether it be located in an urban area or a more natural environment. Information regarding hotel compliance with guidelines is provided to EcoTrotters by a representative of each hotel.

Generally speaking, EcoTrotters defines ecohotels as those which: minimize the hotel’s environmental impact, fund environmental conservation activities, encourage free trade in the local community, respect human rights, and promote knowledge and understanding of ustainability and ecological practices both to the hotel staff and hotel guests.

By providing a space where hotels, travelers, and the public in general can meet and share information and ideas, the EcoTrotters community looks to promote ecological awareness and bridge the gap between ecology and travel.
