UPDATE 28 September 2009

On Saturday and Sunday the informal settlement in Kennedy Road was attacked in what appears to be an organised xenophobic attack on specific ethnic groups. Two people were killed and many have fled.
It looks like we may need to mobilize some humanitarian assistance and see what support we can offer.

We will be keeping you informed, but for now please follow the information updates at
http://www.abahlali.org/

You can also contact the Kennedy Road Development Committee directly
Mzwakhe Mdlalose: 072 132 8458
Anton Zamisa: 079 380 1759
Bheki Simelane: 078 598 9491
Nokutula Manyawo: 083 949 1379

Its extremely distressing that Abahlali has been targetted in these attacks, given their outstanding history of opposing xenophobic violence. Please read their statement on the xenophobic violence last year:

You probably noticed that all the refugee camps around the country are being closed down today. Well, be never even had official camps in Durban, but most people have been forced to leave the places of safety here, and the remaining few will have to leave soon. So the next projects involved:
i) helping secure accomodation
ii) helping people get work again
iii) improving safety

Marjike is doing a lot of work on the first two, and if you can help at all please contact her on - she has some great projects going, and can really use some help
dutoitm@ukzn.ac.za

I am mainly working on safety - we have some plans on working with police and incident reporting, but can also use some help.
Its really important because there are still threats and serious assaults happening now.
You can just facebook me

Also, we have a really nice 24 minute documentary (Burning Man, which was showed on Special Assignment) which is useful for showing to people on the xenophobia issue (schools, churches, friends?)
Let me know if you need a copy.

June 17:
Lungisa Manzi, the city’s head of disaster management said: “The municipality does not have the mandate nor the resources to continue (sic) to sustain the requirements of those foreign nationals who have decided not to return home or to go back to their houses.”

Of course they never actually provided any of that alleged assistance, but we now know that neither the city nor the province are ever going to provide shelters, and are now planning to actively tear down the tent at Albert Park (probably on Friday 18th) and evict the refugees from the park.
