Started in 1995 by 14 Filipina students at Brown, Archipelag-a was created to voice the perspectives of many silenced Filipinas-- and by extension all silenced women--in an attempt to express the multiplicity and diversity of the Filipina culture and experience. Just as the Philippines is an archipelago made up of over 7,000 islands with over 70 different languages and diverse cultures, Archipelag-a is composed of the many autobiographical and fictional perspectives of womyn of the Filipino Alliance at Brown, to try to express their experiences as womyn of color and to explore what it means to be Filipina and Filipina American.
