WE BRING the Georgetown community the best in community issues, provocative discussions and everyday student life. The spirit and motivation to start The Fire was sparked in the spring of 2000. During this turbulent semester on campus, two ethnically-motivated attacks against fellow GU students shook the Georgetown community.
After responding through rallies, student discussions, and meetings with GU administrators; the leaders of the Georgetown community sought to address the issue through other means as well. They decided to create a student publication through which students could continue their activism. Eight students, the Great Eight, answered their call. On May of 2000, under the supervision of its founder and first Editor-in-Chief, Carrie Solages (SFS ’01), they gave birth to the first issue.
Since then, The Fire has grown into a vibrant and provocative magazine, catching the interests of students everywhere. This year, The Fire will carry on the dreams of the original Great Eight as we strive to make every much-anticipated issue entertaining, thought-provoking, and informative. We are constantly seeking to fine-tune our publication and grow into an even better magazine.
This time, we are creating an online edition, switching to a new and enticing magazine format, and adding even more eye-catching and provocative photographs as well as literary pieces. We hope to bring honor to the Great Eight by not simply becoming the best minority-ran magazine on campus. The Fire This Time aims to become the best magazine on campus period.
