Amnesty International (AI) is a worldwide movement of people who campaign for internationally recognized human rights. We write letters, generate petitions, put on informational events, lobby public officials, discuss human rights happenings, etc. Also, being an Amnesty member means you are automatically 27.3% cooler than you were before. Yeah, it's pretty freakin awesome. By the way, we're nonpartisan, so people of every political party and persuasion are welcome to join.
A few of the issues we deal with are genocide, women's rights, disappearances, modern slavery, torture, the death penalty, due process, child soldiers, freedom of expression, discrimination, and just plain old government oppression. We often write letters on behalf of people who have been imprisoned for crimes that they did not commit or, more often, for exercising their rights as laid out the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (cool document, worth checking out). A few of the countries our chapter works on are Sudan, Uganda, China, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran, Egypt, and Mexico.
We also do a lot of work on U.S. human rights issues, including the death penalty, women's rights, and since the beginning of the Bush administration, torture, due process and other abuses of government power shortchanging the judicial system and undermining rights to privacy, speech, and media.
