VERMONT TAG WEBSITE IS HERE!!!!

SUMMER TIME and the living is good!

But genocide is still occurring in Darfur! Over the summer, STAND members will be spearheading a campaign called TAG. The Teach Against Genocide campaign was created by the Genocide Intervention Network with the intention of teaching our nation's youth about the reality of genocide. TAG's goal is to pass legislature making it mandatory for all public schools to incorporate genocide education into their curricula. In Vermont, we will be asking for a funded mandate to pay for curricular resources and teacher training for educators teaching grades 7-12. California and New Jersey have already passed funded Genocide Education mandates, and New York and Illinois have unfunded mandates. If you want to get on board the VT TAG campaign, contact Chris at cfries@uvm.edu.

VT TAG UPDATE!!!!
as of June 10th, Representative Branagan of Georgia, VT has become a lead sponsor. Representatives Larson, Lenes, and Pearson, along with Senator Dick McCormack, have become sponsors of the VT TAG campaign. Human Rights activist John Prendergast has publicly endorsed the campaign. We are off to a good start!

NEWSFLASH!!!!
According to Human Rights First, a U.S.-based nonprofit, a detailed study of Sudanese and U.N. trade data showed that China was virtually the sole supplier of small arms to Sudan, which pays for the weapons with its growing oil revenues.

China sold Sudan $55 million worth of small arms from 2003-2006 and provided 90 percent of Sudan's small arms since 2004 when a U.N. arms embargo took effect, the report said.

LET PEOPLE KNOW THAT CHINA IS FUNDING THIS GENOCIDE!!!!

To Whom It May Concern:

In my 25 years as a human rights activist, I have learned that indifference can be deadly when it comes to genocide. While serving as an adviser to the White House and State Department during the last administration, this became even more evident to me. Since leaving government, I have focused my time and energy on helping to build a permanent constituency of people dedicated to ending genocide.

The Teach Against Genocide campaign is a crucial contributor to the development of a permanent constituency against genocide. The campaign raises awareness and inspires students to act. If we are ever going to be in a position to end genocide, it will require a firm understanding of what it is and why it happens, and how it is stopped.

I urge Vermont Legislators, educators, organizations, and students to support this campaign. Without the help and commitment of the international community, tragedies of this magnitude will continue to plague our planet, leaving a grim legacy for our children.

It would be an honor to help in any way to further this initiative.

Sincerely,

John Prendergast
ENOUGH Project Co-Chair

The UVM STAND Chapter was founded by alumni Meredith Burack (STAND National Outreach Coordinator) in 2005, who until recently had been working full-time, alongside retired actress Mia Farrow to help in the fight against genocide.

This facebook group is a way for members of UVM STAND to stay updated on club meetings, projects and news on Darfur. If you are interested in becoming a member of STAND do not hesitate to join this facebook group or come to our weekly meetings (Times/Locations for Fall '08 TBD)!

With new leadership and a full schedule in front of us, STAND looks to do great things in 2008. The TAG campaign, Lobbying our Representatives, the Bejjing Olympics and the Presidential Election will all be huge events helping to shift the course of this genocide. This very well could be the year that we see the beginnings of a new Sudan. Check out our website, sign up for our listserv and get involved with the hottest group on campus!

In 2004, in response to reading a briefing on the Rwandan genocide, President George W. Bush scrawled the words, "Not on my watch" in the margin of the page. He has since watched for the past four years as the same crimes and atrocities occur in the Darfur region of Sudan. STAND, and the Genocide Intervention Network are now backing a campaign aimed directly at the president himself, urging him to use his last few months in office to create a lasting legacy towards Darfur.
