- Description:
- In a discipline such as math, in which group projects are rare and most homework is often done more efficiently alone, it is sometimes difficult to cultivate a sense of community and meet other mathematicians.
The UW Math Club sponsors both mingling and academic events for mathematicians, including undergraduate talks, department dinners, and joint socials with other clubs.
Come to meet other math majors, to ask questions about which classes to take, which professors are the nicest, share... (read more) - Privacy Type:

for FEB 27, 2009

********************************************
Hello!
Thank you to everyone who came to our movie night, and let us feed you.
Especially because of the upsurge in interest about the club, we're excited to
announce some upcoming events:

(1) Our FIRST Pizza/Lecture (Tues 10/28, PDL C036, 4pm-5pm)
Speaker: Benjamin Hayes
Title: Gauss's Lemma In the Heisenberg Group.
Abstract: My talk is about my VIGRE project last year with Professor
Lind, we solve a problem about group actions by the Heisenberg group,
using a noncommutative version of Gauss's Lemma, no prequisite knowledge of algebra is required.
(Ben is a senior at the University of Washington. Coming to his talk would be a good chance not only to learn a thing or two about Gauss's Lemma, but also to see what undergraduate research can be like.)

(2) Leibniz's Anniversary Celebration (Fri 11/14, PDL C036, 5-7pm)
After contributing immensely to mathematics, and giving us dy/dx, Leibniz died on November 14th, 292 years ago. Let's get together, eat cake, talk about calculus, play math games, and listen to a short talk (given by the brilliant undergraduate Henry Kvinge) about this charming German polymath.

(3) Departmental Dinner (Fri 11/21, 6pm)
UW Math Clubs traditionally sponsors a departmental dinner every quarter, which brings undergraduates, graduate students, and professors together with a common interest: dinner. Meet us on the first floor of Padelford in front of the elevators at 6pm on Friday 11/21, and we will walk to Agua Verde.

More pizza/lectures will be announced after we finalize plans with our
undergraduate speakers.
If you are an undergraduate who has done research that uses substantive mathematics, and wish to give a talk, please click here:

We want to support undergraduate research 100%, and would love to provide an opportunity to share your findings. If you have not done official research, but have a topic of interest that you can give a talk on (ie Sylow Groups) we also encourage that, as well. This is a great way to get practice for graduate school, and/or boost your resume.

As always, questions and comments are welcome.
