TEAM:
- founded 1999
- no tryouts to join as the team is fairly small (at around 10-15 members, in comparison to LSU, for example, which has a full team of 30 members)
- no requirements (no club dues) to being on the team other than staying active and participating; we are all fairly flexible
- no riding experience required. we have people who previously rode western to people with zero experience to people who ride in A shows throughout the country.
- we ride hunter/jumper, and at shows we are judged solely on equitation
- not required to own your own horse to join/ride for the team; in fact, shows are designed so that it isn't necessary. about half the riders on our team don't own their own horse. for the riders on our team who do, some people bring their horses to school with them and continue to ride/show/etc; and others don't - strictly their preference
- approx. cost (includes lessons, show fees, travel expenses, riding apparel & equipment): $900/semester
LESSONS:
- ride twice a week at Russell Equestrian Center (with Col. John W. Russell), to which we coordinate a carpool system
- lessons divided based on skill level; lessons are limited to three or four people at a time
- one hour lessons (excluding time to tack and untack) on Saturdays and Sundays, so as not to conflict with schoolwork; people can ride once or twice a week, although we prefer that you ride as much as possible, obviously :D
- riders can coordinate individually to ride at other barns with approval of our coach and president
SHOWING:
- compete in IHSA shows and ride against schools such as SMU, LSU, UT, Southwestern, Rice, NCTC, Southern Nazarene Univ, Tulane, Univ of Oklahoma, etc etc etc.
- shows are two day shows (one on Saturday, one on Sunday)
- at shows, riders draw a horse's name out of a hat and then ride that horse with no warm-up time - similar to catchriding; it is generally an entirely new experience for most riders, no matter what level
- divisions run from walk/trot to w/t/c to over fences, which has 2'3", 2'6"-2'9", and 3'-3'9" divisions
