NE. What with the crazy, early deadlines and worries about crowded places - you can still have a great bash, if you host one at home. Skip the expensive catering - instead, rustle up some hearty, homestyle finger food and spend your money on keeping everyone’s glasses full.

TWO. If you must go out, why not have a mid-week party when prices are lower and many pubs and restaurents are offering freebies? Besides, you get a break from the maddening weekend crowd.

THREE. Start calling in favours! Now is the time to ask that friend or colleague travelling in from Dubai/Singapore/ any where else with a great duty free, for that bottle of Glenfiddich. The prohibitive import duties in India makes prices anywhere else seem like a steal.

FOUR. Do you sometimes feel like that bottle of pricey, aged tequila is getting over faster than it should? Depute your spouse to keep an eye on how much you are consuming. Sometimes, one drink is enough.

FIVE. Do a ‘Bring Your Own Booze’ party.

SIX. When you call friends over, do you find yourself buying many different kinds of liquor to cater to everyone’s tastes? You might just end up with a lot of half-bottles that you don’t need. Instead, if it is an informal group, make your own Sangria - all you need is a few bottles of ordinary red wine, some shots of brandy or rum, and a lot of chopped fruit.

SEVEN. If you have a tradition of gifting premium alcohol as a Christmas/New Year gift, see if you can find a smaller size. The recipient is more likely to remember the brand.

EIGHT. Find someone who makes authentic, homemade wine for the Christmas season. And is willing to sell you some.

NINE. Better still, why not take the opportunity to learn homestyle wine making yourself? Of course, you will have eager friends lining up at your house to taste the results…

AND, TEN. The week before New Year’s is always busy and every night, someone you know is having a party. Why not keep your bar safe till the week after? Throw a party in the first week of the year when all the activity is dying down. You won’t be saving any money, but you will cheer up all your friends!
