"The current system has handed guaranteed, risk-free profits to private operators who are demonstrably less efficient than British Rail."

This is it, we've had enough of this privatised rubbish. There is not a single, sensible person with any knowledge on this subject that believes this was the right decision to make.

It's time for the Government to intervene and make the railway network once more into a service, not a business.

With the Department for Transport looking to scrap the East Coast franchise and replace it with a short-term management contract, Richard Branson proposes greater private sector involvement in running Britain's railways.

At least we can agree with Branson that the current system doesn't seem to be delivering consistently.

London Midland are praised for a 0% increase in unregulated fares, CrossCounty are condemned for 11% with little return for customers.

Reducing the rail subsidy is a pathetic cop out by the Government of the day who once promised re-nationalisation.

Is now the time to re-nationalise?

"With banks being nationalised almost daily and the national debt now soaring well over the 40% which used to be Gordon Brown's target, what about the railways? Could it not be possible to slip them back into the public sector, something that many people would love to see happen?"

Ken Livingstone and TFL plan to take public control of rail services [lets hope the civil servants can carry this one through following Ken's departure... 23/10]

The Mayor of London plans to bid for the Southern franchise in 2009, presenting proposals to integrate services which terminate in London and unify pricing and restrictions across Greater London.

Mr Livingstone made the following statement to the Times: “I am optimistic that TfL will end up controlling all the franchises in Greater London. We want to get the same standards we are introducing on London Overground on all services and I am confident of getting a sympathetic hearing from the Government.”

The move was welcomed by London TravelWatch, and could see more services return to public ownership - especially if the new London Overground service is a success.

Network Rail looks at running more stations and leasing rolling stock

"... cheaper funds could be used to buy rolling stock with the saving passed on to taxpayers and customers. The spokesman also noted that Network Rail's not-for-dividend status meant any profits it earned would be ploughed back into the rail industry rather than paid to shareholders."

“Railways are an expensive business as they need heavy levels of investment and in the UK that situation has been made worse by privatisation. Whereas British Rail received subsidies, in today’s prices, of a maximum of £1-2bn at the most each year, this year the railways will get around £6bn of taxpayers money, far more than ever before."?

"…British Rail [before privitisation] had been far more efficient than the government had realised"?
