This group is dedicated to the discussion of the teachings of Shingon-shū, founded by Kukai, (空海) also known as Kobo Daishi (弘法大師) (774-835 A.D.) who transmitted the esoteric teachings from Tang Dynasty China to Japan. Kukai is also the founder of the famous Mount Koya, a monastic retreat in Wakayama Prefecture for his disciples to engage in practice.
Shingon (真言), meaning "true words" focuses mainly on meditative and ritual practice which lead to the way of enlightenment, which is not distant and can be reached in this present body. Through the training of the body, speech, and mind under the auspices of a genuine teacher, we can be enlightened and help liberate all sentient beings.
Shingon is a distant cousin of the more familiar Tibetan tradition in Vajrayana Buddhism, and is related to Tendai which incorporates mikkyo teachings.
