On January 11, 2007, our national coalition held a press event and lobbied Congress at the Capitol in D.C., while people across the country called on their Representatives to make college affordable. Just one week later, the House of Representatives took an important first step toward softening the blow of student debt by overwhelmingly passing a bill that cuts interest rates for subsidized Stafford student loans in half. **Students Win Big In Senate - (7-20-07)**

The Senate has passed the Higher Education Access Act of 2007 by a vote of 78-18. The bill will increase grant aid for low income students and help make student loan debt more manageable by cutting excessive subsidies to student loan companies.

An amendment was introduced that would give student loan companies more than $4 billion at the expense of grant aid for low-income students. Thanks to your phone calls and emails over the past couple of days, the amendment failed by a vote of 36-61. See how your Senator voted on this amendment and Higher Education Access Act.

Both the House and the Senate have now passed very promising legislation for students and families. There is still more to do, however. The bill needs to get through conference committee and approval of the final language by both houses, and signed into law by President Bush. Please keep sending letters and phone calls to Congress to build the support these reforms need to become law! You can take action at: http://collegeaffordabilitynow.org/
