Happy New Year folks! How terribly late, I am...
Anyway, thanks for being here and using the group - I hope it continues to help.
If you're in London and you like to meet nice strangers to talk about communications than you could do worse than joining the Coffee Morning group:

Hello everyone.
Just wanted to wish you a very merry Christmas from DTMM.
Congratulations to everyone for another year keeping the truly terrifying nature of our day jobs from our mothers.
If you feel like inflicting some heavy Christmas cheer on your fellow man/woman then download Ogilvy's Chrimbell app here: http://tinyurl.com/6re6wa

Hello,
John's been in touch about his new book The Brand Bubble and the free Brand Asset Valuator tool (the largest database of consumer brand perceptions no less) that goes with it.
Tying financial success to brands, this book sounds pretty timely to me.
More info. and potential for fanship here:

A little random but just wanted to alert you to one of the most darkly comedic sites around: 'garfield minus garfield' (http://garfieldminusgarfield.tumblr.com/)
Remove the main protagonist from the cartoon and the result is actually quite disturbing...
As the site itself explains:
"Who would have guessed that when you remove Garfield from the Garfield comic strips, the result is an even better comic about schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and the empty desperation of modern life? Friends, meet Jon Arbuckle. Let’s laugh and learn with him on a journey deep into the tortured mind of an isolated young everyman as he fights a losing battle against loneliness in a quiet American suburb."
Cheers,
Nick

<Leans back in chair, stretches, and brushes chocolate flakes from front.>
It's been a while since any kind of update, so apologies. I hope you've all had a pumping Easter break if that's the kind of thing your country's in to...
Amongst other things, I've spent the past couple of months thinking about the best way forward for Say Hello (this facebook group's ‘meet up for a bit of banter’ event).
I still think that there are enough places to go to hear people say interesting things about work. I’m not going to attempt to do what the IPA, the APG, or Chinwag already do so well here in the UK.
However, I think there’s still room for something more informal; where you don’t have to talk about work at all.
In the vein of informality and ‘non-workiness’, I’m thinking of having a BBQ in London during the summer for anyone who’s interested. Some food; BYOB; Frisbee; banter; and maybe something a bit special too (tbc).
Looking forward to it already.
Finally, remember to look out for the next big sequels from Fallon:

Thanks to the IPA for organising last night's talk by Blake Chandlee, Facebook's Commercial Director in Europe (and a member of this group, apparently).
For me, facebook has become a bit sickly of late. It's the same feeling you get when you've eaten too many sweets and need a lie down. But it was really interesting to hear the 'book's plans for making the site truly international.
For those who weren't able to make it, they're harnessing the knowledge of all of the existing international members by letting them translate vast parts of the site. Apparently, the trial country was Spain and it took a matter of days to turn facebook into 'caralibro'. More on this here: http://venturebeat.com/2008/01/23/update-on-facebooks-internationalization-efforts/
We also got a peak at Mark Zuckerberg's profile page. Apparently, he likes 'hanging out' and has 560-odd friends.
Cheers,
Nick

The group's been running for about a year now so I thought I'd just say thanks to everyone who's joined, invited others, come to the Say Hello events and contributed interesting stuff.
The year has flown by. We're now approaching 4000 members, have been given the nod by the trade press more times than I can remember, held 4 meet-ups and have reps from at least 100 agencies/org's worldwide.
We started as a London-based group but are lucky enough to have gone global with members all around the world.
I suppose the one uniting factor is that we don't take what we do too seriously.
Thanks again for your support and have great holidays and a prosperous 2008!
Nick

We now have well over 3000 members. That's just startling.
One example of what 3000 people can do:
http://www.greenpeace.org/usa/photosvideos/slideshows/month-in-pictures-april-2007?page=17
For me, the excitement of seeing new people join the group never wears off.
So whether you're a member because you like sharing interesting stuff with people, you're looking for a job, you've heard about Say Hello and would like to come down to the next one, you like the name, you're avoiding work, or none or all of the above, I'd like to say welcome and thanks.
Let's see what happens.
Cheers,
Nick

In yesterday's/today's Campaign Diary, our Say Hello event was said to be a "pretty popular affair" before it had even taken place. Talk about pressure...
Fortunately, Diary was quite accurate with its predictions and we had a good turnout. Thanks very much to those of you who made it down to join in the festivities.
Photos of the night to follow soon.
Cheers,
Nick

For those members who have yet to deceive their mums about their profession, i.e. are still looking to start a career in advertising, there's a great blog here:
http://adgrads.blogspot.com/
They've even managed to get Jon Steel to write a piece - quite a coup.
In the world of facebook, Musa's groups for Advertising Applicants 2008 is also gathering steam:
