- First Ever RU Football Game
Saturday 4/19/2008 the team traveled to Fairfax Virginia to play George Mason University. At the start of the game our guys were a little shaky, being that it was the first football game in the history of Radford University. Each team had agreed that the first half would be played as a scrimmage for the purposes of spring ball. The second half would be played as a live game and count as the final score. RU was on defense starting in the first half. The first play was completely shut down at the line of scrimmage, the second play was a fumbled hand-off by GMU and recovered for a loss, finally the third play for GMU was a sack by Kirk Lavery in the backfield. RU then took control of the ball. The first pass of the game for RU, thrown by Cody Mitchell, was a deep pass landing in the hands of Alex Noble and completed for a touchdown. The game stayed at 6-0 RU with 3 minutes left in the second half. GMU had the ball at the 30 yard line and attempted a pass play that was intercepted by RU’s Matt Vecchio and run back to the 1 yard line. The score was reset, and the second half commenced with RU on offense first. The run game was shut down early and RU resorted to the air, making solid gains. With 8 minutes left in the first 3rd quarter, RU’s Brandon Adams hit RU’s Matthew Bales on a hitch route that was turned up and run for a touchdown. This set the score once again to 6-0 RU due to a blocked extra point. RU’s defense created a complete wall for GMU’s offense, and nothing was accomplished for them except a corner post route touchdown with minutes left. With 3 minutes remaining in the 4th quarter, RU’s Brandon Adams tossed up an interception ball that ended RU's drive. GMU kept the ball on the ground for game ending 6-7 GMU. GMU has been together for over 10 years, yet RU managed to play at their level from the start. The RU Football team all showed up to the game sporting t-shirts with the slogan “RU Football, The Tradition Starts Now” For these guys, they will always remember, but for RU maybe it will continue on.
