Stephen has been accompanying silent films for over 15 years. Based at London's National Film Theatre but playing at venues across the country, he has recorded music for museum projections, digital TV screenings and DVD releases of silent films. This year his accompaniment for 'A Cottage on Dartmoor' was met with acclaim at the Pordenone Film Festival. As well as playing for ballet and contemporary classes at several of London's dance schools, he occasionally collaborates with a small group, specialising in recreations of magic lantern shows. In his spare time he writes screenplays, and his short film 'Fatherspace' was shown on Channel 4 and at the London Film Festival.




“I think that music will play an increasingly important role in presentations of silent films. When I talk to younger audience members, it is usually the 'performance' aspect of the event which most excites them. It is as though live music dispels their preconceptions, enabling them to engage with what they are watching. This seems indispensable, when one considers that the thirty years of silent film production will soon recede beyond living memory.”
