- Description:
- On 17th February 2006, a landslide occurred in the province of Southern Leyte, Philippines. Following days of heavy rainfall, the hillside above the village of Guinsaugon collapsed sending tonnes of mud and boulders onto the houses and other buildings below.
The landslide smothered the village killing approximately 60% of the population, some 950 people in total. Amongst those killed were all of the staff and all of the pupils of the Elementary School. 284 children lost their lives.

Phew! Doesn't time fly! As we pass the third anniversary of the landslide, I am happy to bring news of great progress.
Over the last few weeks, Sylvia Hood, with the assistance of Dag from Coral Cay, have managed to gain the support of St Bernard Mayor Rico C. Rentuza, School Principal Garces, District Supervisor Diaz and Barangay Captain Coquilla.
The following achievements have been made:
- Agreement for the project to go ahead.
- Land set aside in a central position in the village school grounds.
- The local municipality has agreed to provide labour
- Plans have been drawn up with further options to follow
- Quotations have been received with more to follow
In addition, Coral Cay have continued to pledge their logistical support and we are honoured to have Dag Navarrette on hand to assist us.
The Project funds at the end of 2008 stand at £2,754.97. Based on recent quotes and with the Government and local volunteers supplying labour, this is more than enough to build the Playground.
I have posted some plans on the Playground page. Please let me know what you think.
If you would like to help with the construction of the Playground, Coral Cay Conservation have very generously offered to accommodate volunteers at a bargain rate. Please contact me for more details.
As ever, thank you for your continued support.

LATEST NEWS, March 2008
Just over two years ago, the most devastating disaster hit the Philippines.
The bank account stands ready to accept your donations.
At this stage, I believe we have enough to build a playground, but will need local help with construction. I have a couple of ideas about who to approach to help with this and hope to visit the region again next month.
It's not too late to donate or raise money and many are actively still doing so.
Thanks

LATEST NEWS. November 2007
Thanks to everyone who has worked so hard to raise money for the Project we now have nearly £3000 in the Project Bank Account!!
This would go a long way in the Philippines and I think it would be enough to construct the playground using local contractors and volunteers; possibly with the help of the local senior school.
As you know, the original plan was to raise enough money for an international team to travel to the Philippines and build the playground.
It seems that we haven't raised enough money to send a large team out, but those who have raised money will be invited to come and help and the project would subsidise travel.
As for a time-frame, I intend to wait until we have sufficient funds and all is in place, and then set a date and see who, out of those who raised funds, would be available to come and help. I will set a deadline of around the second quarter of 2008 to draw a line on fundraising and set a date for construction.
As stated in the Project Plan if by any chance the project can't go ahead, all the funds raised will be donated to the Philippines National Red Cross (Southern Leyte chapter) to assist them to manage future disasters.
The extent of the playground is only limited by the space available, and the funds we raise.
