We are citizens first, and consumers second. Public space must reflect this distinction, and should be fully and equally accessible by all who walk through it. Public space is the guarantee of a space for citizens to engage in society and interact with each other without commercial influence.

We are dedicated to protecting our shared common spaces from commercial influence and privatization. While some see the streets as an untapped source of advertising revenue, we see protected public spaces... (read more)

News:
Longtime TPSCer Alison Gorbould, who spent years fighting billboards at City Council, has written this note about the upcoming Billboard Bylaw and Tax:

***

It is not surprising that the billboard industry is upset with the proposed sign bylaws

THEIR BUSINESS MODEL HAS RELIED ON THEM BEING ALLOWED TO FLOUT THE RULES WITH IMPUNITY, knowing the City could not afford to keep them in check. Trying to make them obey the rules has cost the City a lot of money.

After so many years of blatant bad behaviour, isn't it time they had to pay their fair share? And maybe give something back to the City from which they have profited for so long?

The wild protestations of the industry are nonsense. Billboard companies the world over manage to make great profits without breaking the law.

Pirates and drug dealers get upset when you try to regulate them too. :)

-------
It was interesting to see who was there at [the City Council committee meeting earlier this month]. A lot of well-dressed people who were being paid to be there, who all hated the proposed bylaws. AND A BUNCH OF CITIZENS WHO WEREN'T BEING PAID TO BE THERE - EVERY SINGLE ONE OF WHOM SUPPORTED THE PROPOSED BYLAWS.

(As a citizen who is interested in this issue, I have been branded part of a "Special Interest Group" by the industry. By which they mean, I guess, a person who doesn't stand to gain anything monetarily and who still cares enough to get involved.)

So who is going to make the decision about what our city is going to look like? Money from an industry that has acted in bad faith for years? Or citizens as represented through our Councillors?

------

I have been involved in the consultation process throughout. The industry's claim that there hasn't been "proper consultation" is nonsense. I have never been so impressed with City staff, and I have never encountered such a thorough process.

Did staff agree with everything I wanted? Certainly not. But that's what the industry seems to mean when they say they haven't been properly consulted.

Don't let them force any more delays. Let's do this!
