CELEBRITY SUPPORT!

Exciting news!

Dexplicit, the Foreign Beggars, and Amir Khan have all signed our Respect? Pledge!

They're supporting the Respect? campaign because they agree young people can speak up about negative portrayals in the media if we use the internet to make ourselves heard.

Add your name to theirs at www.pledgebank.com/RespectSpeakUp - getting 1,000 signatures will prove we mean what we say!

Check out the pics from Dexplicit, Foreign Beggars and Amir Khan in the photos section too...

July 2009

There is much to report – the Respect Young People’s Advisory Group (RYPAG) are really getting out and about…

Wednesday 8th July – Children & Young People Now magazine’s Positive Images Awards

Liam Pearce of Respect? has won an award! He was given the national prize for ‘Best involvement by a young person in promoting positive media portrayal’. The awards recognise media outlets, youth groups, and young individuals that have excelled at portraying young people in a fair and balanced way. Liam faced stiff competition, but judge Peter Lister said “Liam’s role had a clear impact.”

Well done Liam and well done Respect?!

Saturday 4th July – the 2morro Festival

Sophie Manning from the RYPAG spoke up for young people’s representation in the media during a debate held at this festival. A member of the panel, she offered Respect?’s perspective on the situation, and she should know – she’s been campaigning about it for four years now!

The 2morro Festival (www.2morro.org) was held on London’s South Bank, with other great campaigners there such as Channel 4’s Battlefront. Mo from Respect? joined Sophie to promote the Pledge among the other young people on the day. We still need more signatures though…sign, sign! http://www.pledgebank.com/RespectSpeakUp

And check out the shots below…

June 2009:

Sophie, a member of the Respect? Young People's Advisory Group, spoke about the campaign at a consultation called 'Every Headline Matters' (organised by the Institute for Global Ethics).
Journalists, youth charities, and of course young people, were all there to discuss the problem of unfair representation in the media. We came up with a couple of possible solutions:

- i) a Guidance for Journalists will be developed by the Society of Editors and the UK Youth Parliament - not telling the media what to do but providing it with information on how young people would like to be represented.
- ii) We also came up with the idea of a one-stop shop 'multi-stakeholder exchange' with the name of the Youth Media Network. This would be a place for young people and journalists to get in touch with each other, and understand more about each other. It would also be a directory of contacts and of recent research.

Photos are below - a little blurry I'm afraid!

Some great articles in the news about our cause at the moment, thanks to new research published by Women in Journalism. They're supporters of the Respect? campaign, and are doing what they can to get the message out.

You can read about their research in this article from the Independent:

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/hoodies-louts-scum-how-media-demonises-teenagers-1643964.html

And this is a comment piece written by one of the journalists who took part in the launch debate:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-1162026/SUZANNE-MOORE-We-demonise-boys-feral---wonder-turn-hoodies.html

What do you think? Do you agree with what she says? Why not post a comment online, after all, that's what Respect? is all about. We've got to show journalists young people have a voice!

And of course, the more people to sign the Pledge, the better!

Monday 12 January 2009

A new report has been produced which backs up what we've all been shouting about at the Respect? campaign - young people don't get the media profile they deserve!

Read about the report here on the BBC, and why not leave a comment online?

Tell your mates about it and get them to sign the online Respect? pledge:

To continue our investigation into the way we interact with the media, TheSite.org has created a survey about media consumption. Fill it in, and you could win a magazine subscription of your choice!

http://survey.youthnet.org/mrIWeb/mrIWeb.dll?I.Project=MEDIACONSUMPTION

Go on - it won't take long...

Send it to all your mates too, and we can use the results to continue our campaign to get your views heard in the press.

Facebook For Good - Vote for Respect? !
Sophie Manning has entered the campaign in Facebook's competition to find a group which has used Facebook to promote a good cause. She needs your vote to get to the next round!

http://apps.facebook.com/facebookforgood/contests/82/entries/4591

It seems the more votes we get, the more profile the entry gets: which means more people finding out about the Respect? campaign and hopefully signing our pledge as well.

Wednesday 12 November

There's more to read about Respect? in the press - Liam Pearce has given the Guardian a great interview about what you all stand for.

Breaking News!!!

Tuesday 11 November, 5:21pm

The Guardian newspaper has just posted an article online about today's launch:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/organgrinder/2008/nov/11/digitalmedia-tvnews

So, you know what you've got to do - comment on the story online and send it to all your friends! It's your news, and it's time to be heard! Who will be first...?!

Tuesday 11 November, 5:00pm

The third phase of the campaign was launched this morning on London's Fleet Street - a place famous for its connections to the British press. Four members of the Respect? Young People's Advisory Group were joined by former BBC broadcaster Martyn Lewis, and a HUGE newspaper front-page prop, which they pushed their faces through to literally put young people at the heart of the news - check out the photos below!

The launch will help spread the word, but we really need lots of support to reach our goal of 1,000 young people making the pledge at http://www.pledgebank.com/RespectSpeakUp to make it work!

It's time for us to make the media listen to what we have to say, by commenting online, writing to editors of papers or magazines, or calling in to TV or radio programmes. It’s our news too.

Tell your friends to sign up and help us meet our target of 1,000!
