As events unfold in Afghanistan with greater risk, greater injury, and more tragedy as tensions rise, Canadians are inevitably going to ask questions as to why we are in Afghanistan.
We are there at the request of the democratically elected government along with 36 other nations, where the goal is to improve the security situation in Afghanistan and assist in rebuilding the country. Exactly what we’ve been doing, and need to continue doing. I know there are many different views on the extension of our mission in Afghanistan until 2011 or even beyond. But, we need to finish what we started, need to continue in helping them rebuilding their country after having suffered through decades of instability, oppression and insurgency and having had to deal with human rights abuses, terror, conflict, drought and poverty. It is everyone’s turn to thank Canadian troops and show support for their mission. These soldiers make the ultimate sacrafice and lay their lives on the line on a daily basis, to keep us safe.
We also want to thank all the families of our troops for supporting their Family members overseas and for having to deal with their own sacrifices they make on a daily basis. We applaud you all for being so strong during those difficult times.
It will only take a minute, but it means everything.
You enjoy the freedoms you have in this country because these people are ready to lay down their lives for you. They are your neighbours, your co-workers, your families.
Our goal is to bring a little warmth and cheer to our fighting men and women in recognition for the sacrifices they have made.
