- 11/27/09: YAY! Piatt County, IL. another 55 miles!
11/21/09: Successful flight with 4 cranes 55 miles to Livingston Co., IL. The other 16 made most of the trip yesterday, almost entirely on their own when they were released for a routine exercise flight. Soon after release they caught a thermal a began to spiral up - climbing before heading south. Richard van Heuvelen caught up with them in his aircraft and guided them to our planned stopover in Livingston Co., IL
11/15/09: 10,000 miles of leading Whooping cranes with ultralights. That's almost halfway around the world... This incredible milestone was reached this morning on our way from Winnebago Co., IL to LaSalle Co., IL.
11/05/09: Winnebago County, ILLINOIS! Yet another spectacular flight with all 20 Whooping cranes following one ultralight!
11/03/09: GREEN COUNTY, WI - another great flight with all 20 birds trailing Richard's wing!
11/01/09: YAY! ALL 20 birds made the flight today - nobirdy needed to be crated! We hope this is a huge boost of confidence for these young Whooping cranes and a sign of great things to come. Now, if we could only get some nice gentle breezes from the north we may be able to skip some stops and make up for lost time...
10/27/09: SUCCESS!!! well, 50% at least. 10 cranes made it to the 2nd migration stop. 3 with Joe's trike and 7 with Richard. The remaining 10 were crated and transported by ground (and I hope they're hanging their heads in shame)
10/26/09: We tried - then the ceiling closed in preventing a flight this morning... Perhaps this afternoon if the haze clears...
10/25/09: Rain continues... VERY wet conditions.
10/22/09: The 8 Whooping cranes that remained at the West training site were transported today via crate/ground vehicle to our first migration stop.
*Please note the CraneCam will be down tonight so that we can charge the battery bank and deploy it tomorrow at the migration stop where the birds are. Rain continues...
10/21/09: Managed to fly 1 more crane, #907 over to our firs/t migration stop. Others simply refused to follow for any distance and conditions deteriorated, becoming very rough.
10/19/09: Status quo. Still have 11 at first migration stop and 9 at the West site on Necedah NWR. Waiting for weather to improve. CraneCam has been relocated to the West site: http://www.operationmigration.org/crane-cam.html
10/17/09: Too windy to attempt a flight this morning, however, this afternoon the wind dropped so Chris, Joe and Richard led the 4 cranes from the East site, over to our 1st migration stopover where they joined the 7 that made it there yesterday! Currently 11 at migration stop #1 and 9 still at the West site on Necedah NWR
.
10/16/09: Crane rodeo ensues. Final Score: 7 cranes at 1st stopover. 5 at the East site and 9 at the West site.
10/14/09: STILL at Necedah NWR - waiting for weather to improve...
10/06/09: Target Departure date set as Oct. 10th - will we depart that day?
