GLENN SCHOOL EVENTS

1. 2009 Public Management Research Conference: October 1-3
The John Glenn School of Public Affairs at The Ohio State University is honored to host the 10th National Public Management Research Conference in Columbus, Ohio, October 1-3. Since 1991 the Public Management Research Association Conference has become the foremost gathering of leading public management scholars in both the US and around the world. This bi-annual event is sponsored by the Public Management Research Association, which takes a special responsibility to further relations among researchers working in the public policy, public management, nonprofit and governance disciplines in the United States and abroad. PMRA emphasizes the links between the study of public institutions and their management and the study of public policy.

The majority of the conference will take place at the Hyatt on Capitol Square, with special evening receptions at the Ohio Statehouse on October 1, and in Page Hall on October 2. Conference participation is by invitation only, but we will be looking for volunteers to help staff the event. For more information about the conference, visit: http://glenn.osu.edu/PMRC/. If you’re interested in volunteering, please contact Laura Sipe at sipe.9@osu.edu or 614-247-6369.

FACULTY, STAFF, AND STUDENTS IN THE NEWS

1. Former Kiplinger Fellows Recognized
Glenn School Communications Director Hank Wilson, a 2008 Knight Digital Media Fellow and a former reporter with The Daily Press, has been chosen as a finalist for a 2009 Online News Association award for online video journalism. His multimedia project delved into a culture of “no snitching,” and explored why residents living in a crime-ridden area of Newport News, Virginia wouldn’t cooperate with police in identifying murder suspects. Hank used a wide variety of multimedia techniques in his reporting, which was conducted during his fellowship in the Kiplinger Program in Public Affairs Journalism.

2008 Kiplinger Fellows Charlise Lyles and Michelle Kearns have won journalism awards and recognition for projects they produced while fellows at the John Glenn School. Charlise, co-founding editor of Catalyst Ohio, was awarded the Clarion Award from the Association for Women in Communications for best special section or group project for a small magazine and a first place award for the Best Social Justice Reporting from the Ohio Society of Professional Journalists. Her project explored the struggles faced by young, low-income mothers in getting and keeping their children in preschool in Ohio. Michelle, a reporter with the Buffalo News, was given an honorable mention by the New York State Associated Press for her multimedia package on how charitable dollars are spent from the tax-free accounts of foundations in western New York. The project provided an in-depth look at how this money affects one of the nation’s poorest cities. Both projects employed multimedia and project reporting techniques the fellows honed in the Kiplinger Program in Public Affairs Journalism.
